So, again, this week’s #AbroadLife is different. It is. I saw a viral tweet on Monday about this couple who returned to Nigeria to start afresh after japa because they couldn’t make a sustainable income there. Many people said it’s because they were “illegal immigrants,” which is just absurd. Those aren’t the only people that choose to come back to their home country. So I decided to search for Nigerians who’d also relocated back home to prove a point — not everyone who travels abroad and comes back home are illegal immigrants. The kind of petty I like. Was it difficult finding multiple people? I got help from friends who shared recommendations, as well as volunteers from Zikoko and Citizen’s Whatsapp communities. Do you have a favourite out of all the stories? The Sudan conflict one, even though it was the shortest. I’d closely followed the situation of Nigerian students stuck there back in April and even got to interview one of them at the time. So you can say I have some personal (or maybe professional) affiliations to the story. It’s just sad that the government has not fulfilled their promise to transfer these students to Nigerian universities after three months. They need to do better. I also really liked Osione’s story of returning to Nigeria to become a diplomat. I hope her dreams come true.
