But when I started to interview them (they’re in their late 50s), they told me it was their parents I should be talking to about getting married during the war. The woman’s father was staying with them, but they had to get her mother on the phone. This was the first interview where I had to actually schedule a date and time and go to the venue physically, recording everything with my phone like those journalists you see on TV. I felt so proud of myself. You should! It’s a great read. I’m curious, though, did the subjects sound like they were still affected by the war? They weren’t traumatised or anything. But they were rather cagey about the details of how they went about during the war. Like they’d compartmentalised that part somewhere in their brain and only had some summary they’d memorised for conversations like this. But then again, it was that way for most of their stories about their early life together. Also, I guess it’s because they’re in their 80s. Maybe the details are just blurry. But what I did sense was a disdain for Ojukwu.
