I Rode Across America]( Every kid has that bike—the one that is emblematic of childhood, the one that takes them on the local adventures and leaves an indelible mark on their memory. For me it was cherry red with a white banana seat. I would spend hours practicing jumps and doing wheelies on the hill in our driveway in Riverdale, New York, a quiet, leafy section of the Bronx. Around that time, I was maybe 9 or 10 years old, a neighbor took me birdwatching—an unusual endeavor for a little Black boy in the 1970s, but I fell in love with it, sometimes traveling over two hours in one direction to get to pristine sanctuaries, flipping through the Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America trying to identify what was in front of me. Back then I was in awe of the yellow-shafted variety of Northern flicker—a type of woodpecker with a red nape, black bib, and yellow tailfeathers. The idea that this beautiful, brightly colored bird could be found in my backyard and I could learn about it in a book was amazing to me.
