When their oldest of two sons, Carter, now 16, started elementary school in 2006, the couple noticed the line of cars to drop kids off was increasingly long and full of annoyed parents—no one was riding a bike or walking. So Ty and Johanna, now 44 and 46, started leading their sons and a few other neighborhood kids to and from school on bikes. Soon, it turned into a "bike train" with a dozen kids, and word spread.
