We couldn't do it without you! Join us as we take a look back at 2023! [Visit BIBLIO now→]( [Map of the Middle Earth]( Our most expensive sale in 2023 As is the case with the Rings of Power, many would desire to possess them, but only a few have the privilege of owning this essential piece of the history of Literature. The most expensive book sold this year at BIBLIO was a first edition, first impression copy of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, signed by J.R.R. Tolkien himself. The price of this copy reached over $36,000. The Lord of the Rings was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during World War II in letters to his son. For its publication, the work was divided into three volumes to minimize any potential financial loss. They appeared over the course of a year, from July 1954 to October 1955. Of the first print run, only 3,000 copies of the first book, 3,250 of the second and 7,000 of the final book were produced. [See more copies →]( Tons of fantastic books like these have travelled from our shelves to yours [The picture of Dorian Gray]( Signed deluxe edition of The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891) The original binding of Oscar Wilde's only novel was poorly produced, but three months after its appearance a signed limited edition was published. This deluxe copy was printed on Van Gelder handmade paper. First edition copy of George Orwell's Animal Farm (1945) Animal Farm was first published in London in 1945, with a print run of just 4,000 copies. This copy, sold in BIBLIO and specially appreciated by many bibliophiles, has the original green and grey dust jacket, famously fragile as it was cheaply produced to meet wartime economy standards. [Animal Farm]( [The Diary of Anne Frank]( First Dutch edition of Anne Frank's Diary (1947) Originally titled The Annex, this edition of Anne Frank's account of her time hiding during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands is one of the most desirable items in the collectible book market. [Collection of book covers]( Throughout the latest months, you have proved what an exquisite bookish taste you have! The list of the most expensive sold books includes several 20th-century classics such as The Catcher in the Rye or Rebecca. A gorgeous inscribed copy of Daphne Du Maurier's famous work was sold earlier this year. Joan Didion's The White Album and Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian appear on the list dozens of times, as do any of the more than 60 novels written by Stephen King. The King of Horror is definitely one of your favorite authors, and we are delighted to have delivered to you hundreds of his unforgettable stories. [Search for more amazing books →]( The nicest ephemera sold this 2023 [Original flyer designed by Patti Smith ]( This flyer designed by Patti Smith was made for an early and infamous reading by her and Jim Carroll at the St. Mark's Poetry Project. Scheduled to take place on April 12, 1972 at the St. Marks Church in the Bowery where Smith gave her very first reading only the previous year, Carroll was a no-show for the performance. This is undoubtelly a rare document from the careers of two key figures from both the downtown literary and punk scenes. We couldn't be prouder that this exceptional document was sold on BIBLIO! Here's to the next 20 years! 2023 was the year we turned 20, and just like when we started, we remain an independent, employee-owned business. We love books and are committed to helping our booksellers get their incredible inventory to passionate bibliophiles around the world. Thank you all for supporting a healthy business environment for the used and rare book trade. From all of us at BIBLIO, our warmest greetings and stay well and well-read this 2024!
