More than 100,000 black, biracial, French, Spanish, British and Polish troops fought on the side of the rebellion, with the formerly enslaved Toussaint Louverture emerging as Haiti's most prominent general. In the end, Haiti became the world’s only nation born out of a successful slave revolt, and the second free country in the Western World after the U.S.A. But since the Revolution Haiti has faced many challenges. After the war France, Britain, America, and other nations refused to recognize the nation and isolated them from partnerships, and the new government was forced to pay ‘reparations’ in the equivalent of 21 billion dollars, to former slave owners. The island has been plagued by devastating hurricanes and earthquakes, including a 7.1 magnitude quake in 2010 that claimed approximately 300,000 lives and incurred billions of dollars worth of damage to an already struggling infrastructure. Cholera and Covid epidemics have hit the country hard, and a spiraling political and security crisis has thrown the government in chaos. Although many donors and countries pledged to help, a lot of that aid failed to come through. Today Haiti is one of the top five poorest countries in the world, with 80% of the people living in poverty, many without access to clean water, health care, proper lodging or adequate food supply. We have curated a list a books about the inspiring people of Haiti and its tumultuous history. Even 223 years later, Haiti continues to struggle enormously with internal conflict and gang violence and as a result millions of Haitians are without basic nutrition and healthcare. Because the conditions are so dangerous, very little crucial outside aid is able to reach desperate Haitian families. However, some courageous organizations remain committed to providing vital healthcare and nutritional assistance. Consider Haiti, is one such group, and has been measurably improving the health outcomes of children in Haiti for over 15 years. Please consider Haiti and make a donation today.
