Let's me and you have a real moment of honesty...
You know you shouldn't be eating so much sugar (I know, I know, sometimes the truth is painful), and here's why:
- It makes you gain weight,
- It causes your energy levels to crash,
- And it makes you more susceptible to diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
In fact, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of The End of Dieting, says eating too much sugar should be considered just as dangerous as smoking cigarettes. "A diet with sugar and high glycemic index foods promotes all the leading causes of death in America," he says.
Yikes!
So if you want to lose weight and stay healthy, that pesky sugar just needs to go (insert your favorite crying emoji here... LOL!).
Just like with any good fight (and for you, this may be a bit of a fight), you need to be armed with just the right plan to overcome the power sugar may have over you right now.
Below is the 3-step strategy I give to all my clients that come in and tell me,
"I just can't stop eating sugar!"
I can promise you that if you follow each step, you will release the hold sugar has on you in less than 72 hours (yup, that fast!). However, I highly encourage you to follow these steps for a full week so you can free yourself from the trappings of a sugar addiction.
1. Get all processed sugar foods out of the house. I know you've heard this one plenty of times before, but did you do it? An addiction to sugar has been compared to an addiction to drugs and alcohol, and any alcoholic knows they must get all tempting beverages out of their house.
You may not think it's that serious, but I definitely do. Considering that heart disease kills more people each year than cancer, I would say a serious approach is definitely required.
I want you to throw out anything in your house that contains processed sugar. That includes all cakes, cookies, pastries, soda (regular and diet), and candy. If you have family members who refuse to jump on board with your sugar clean-out, ask them to hide those items somewhere you won't know.
I know it sounds a bit extreme, but sometimes extreme measures are what finally do the trick.
2. Arm yourself with the right weapons. You're going to need a toolbox of weapons (or go-to foods) to use when the sugar cravings come on strong.
Be sure to have the following foods available in your home so you can squash a sugar craving using all-natural wholesome foods that are good for you:
- Your favorite fruits (include apples, bananas, and berries - they make for delicious dessert combinations)
- All-natural stevia
- Raw honey
3. Be ready with your favorite "safe" desserts. Which version of processed sugar gets you the most? Is it cookies? Cake? Soda? Pastries? Chocolate? I want you to get real honest with yourself and figure out which sugary food causes you to surrender most often. Once you do, you need to find 2-3 healthy alternatives for each.
If it's soda, how about homemade sweet tea using stevia and raw honey?
If it's chocolate, how about raw cacao powder and almond butter balls instead?
I promise, there is a healthy alternative for ANY sweet that can help you finally kick the sugar cravings once and for all.
As much as I've seen the above strategies work successfully, they have an even better chance of creating long-term success when combined with a healthy eating plan filled with wholesome foods that will keep you satisfied and free of cravings all day long.
