It may be a sign that you have diabetes. As far-fetched as that sounds, a persistent buildup of mold in your toilet may mean that you, or someone in your family, has diabetes or prediabetes. What’s the Connection? Mold thrives in warm, damp conditions, especially when sugars like glucose are present. People with poorly managed diabetes, or people who have undiagnosed diabetes, may have high levels of glucose in their urine. That’s because insulin is not able to lower glucose effectively. The result? A lot of sugar floating around in the bloodstream. The body then tries to eliminate the extra glucose by sending it to the kidneys to be released in the urine - this is called ‘glycosuria’. People with glycosuria tend to urinate frequently with high amounts of glucose in that urine. Unfortunately this can feed the mold in your toilet, often forming a black ring around the basin. Here are 6 more diabetes warning signs to look out for: 1. Funny Skin Changes: Other unusual signs of diabetes include odd symptoms such as darker, pigmented areas of skin, especially near the neck, along with skin tags. Skin tags are small areas of skin that stick out, often around the eyes. Both are signs of high levels of insulin, or insulin resistance. 2. Recurrent Infections: Diabetics often have poor immune function, making it difficult to fight infections. If you have recurrent bladder infections, yeast infections, vaginal infections, or skin wounds that heal slowly, it can be a sign of high blood sugar and lowered immune function. 3. Blurry Vision: If your vision suddenly seems worse or you wake up sometimes with blurry vision, you may have high blood sugar or poorly controlled diabetes. Glucose in your bloodstream can clog up the tiny blood vessels in the eyes, resulting in swelling, blurry vision, or difficulty focusing on objects. 4. Itchy Skin: Higher than normal levels of sugar in the bloodstream are very damaging to tiny nerve fibers throughout the body but especially the nerves in the fingers, hands, toes and feet. The damaged nerve fibers and reduced circulation cause itchy, peeling skin. Nerve damage also can cause chronic pain such as burning and tingling in hands, feet, arms and legs. 5. Sexual Problems: High glucose damages nerves and blood vessels near the penis, resulting in problems with erections, or ED. Excess glucose can also affect women, causing problems with libido, arousal, and poor lubrication. 6. Mood Changes: Blood sugar ups and downs can affect mood, causing irritability, anxiety, depression, and lethargy. In fact, many people with diabetes battle depression because of their illness. Moodiness may also be a reflection of a poor diet, low in vital nutrients, and high in processed carbohydrates. See your doctor if you notice one or more of the above symptoms, combined with any of the more common symptoms of diabetes including: - Constant thirst - Frequent urination - Extreme fatigue - Skin infections It’s time to get a checkup and get glucose levels and HbA1C measured. Diabetes and high blood sugar left untreated can cause major health problems including, heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, amputations, stroke and death.
