I shared A LOT of tips for better hair, skin, nails, and health in 2023. Here are my favorites… {NAME} — well here we are, December already… And what an incredible year it’s been. :) Over the course of 2023, Dr. Danielpour and I shared A LOT of DIY skincare, makeup, and style tricks in this newsletter… So today, I’m sharing my top 5 FAVORITES to help you look your absolute best as you prepare for holiday parties, family gatherings, and a whole new year ahead (crazy to think it’s almost 2024 already)! Alright, let’s dig into…  Dr. Layke’s 2023 “Top Tips” Roundup --------------------------------------------------------------- #1. Avoid the “sugar sags” If you — like me — find yourself indulging in a little too many sweets this time of year… You might notice your skin looking a little lackluster or dull. This happens because sugar leads to a process called glycation… Which damages collagen and elastin — the 2 components that give your skin structure and shape… Leaving skin looking more muted, saggy, and wrinkled. One way you can help counteract this? Increase your Vitamin B intake! Both Vitamins B1 and B6 are incredibly effective in reducing the visible effects glycation, so try to incorporate them in your diet as much as possible — especially if you have a sweet tooth. You can find Vitamin B1 naturally in many foods, including: - Green peas - Spinach - Milk - And nuts And you can find Vitamin B6 in chicken, fish and whole grain products. Aside from reducing glycation, Vitamin B is also known for its ability to improve skin tone and liven up a dull-looking complexion — so you can’t go wrong by including it in your diet. #2. Conceal with care Does holiday stress have you worried about pesky under-eye bags and dark circles? According to my a makeup artist friend, there’s no better hack than using a light-reflecting concealer. These formulas can bounce light off the skin, creating a brighter, more luminous appearance. The trick is to use the right product with proper application. When shopping for a concealer, look for formulas that contain naturally brightening minerals, like mica, titanium dioxide, and silica. These are known for their reflective properties — while still being skin-friendly… And can quickly help give your delicate under eye area a brighter, younger, and more radiant look! To get the most natural looking finish, opt for a shade slightly lighter than your skin tone… And remember, less is more! Caking on any makeup product will only draw extra attention to wrinkles, fine lines, and other imperfections. #3. The secret to a good hair day, everyday Here’s a hair tip my wife swears by: If you’re dealing with frizz or flyaways — DON’T try to brush them away! Doing so can often cause MORE friction… and therefore, more static. That’s why Kendhal always keeps a few dryer sheets in her purse. See, dryer sheets contain ingredients that help neutralize electrons (the ions that cause static)... So by quickly running a sheet along your hair — you can help eliminate static and tame those frizzy flyaways instantly. By the way, she heavily prefers this method over standard hairspray… and I couldn’t agree more. After all, many hairsprays contain harsh alcohols that can leave your hair dry and damaged. (Not to mention, they’re downright awful for the ozone layer.) So trow a couple dryer sheets in your bag — and thank me later. :) #4. The French Tuck If you’re self-conscious about your midsection or hips… You’ll love this brilliant “body slimming” trick a stylist friend of mine shared. It’s called the French tuck. Don't worry if you haven't heard of it — I was in the same boat. It looks just like this: Now it may sound counterintuitive… But my friend says leaving shirts untucked can actually accentuate the hips and midsection — the very thing most people want to avoid. A French tuck, however, gives you the polished effect of a tucked in shirt, while still concealing the bulk of the waist area. To implement this tip, simply tuck the front portion of an oversized shirt into the front of high rise bottoms. The back and sides of the shirt will remain untucked. Best of all — it works with pretty much any top. #5. World’s best DIY nail soak If you love having beautiful, strong, healthy looking nails (a major sign of youth)… Then this homemade nail soak is just the ticket! This recipe is packed with protein and antioxidants — to help prevent chipping and encourage shiny, healthy nails that look perfect bare OR under nail polish. Here’s how it’s done: 1. Combine 2 egg yolks and 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a medium bowl. 2. Whisk in 1 tablespoon of honey until the mixture is smooth and creamy. 3. Allow your nails to soak in the mixture for 15 minutes, then gently rinse in warm water. And that’s it! Give it a shot, and you’ll notice your nails looking healthier (and younger) in no time. Plus, the hydrating olive oil will help to replenish lost moisture and prevent dry cuticles — a must for these brutal winter months. --------------------------------------------------------------- Alright, {NAME} — that does it for my 2023 roundup.
