You’ll never say “I have nothing to wear” again! {NAME}, here’s a sentence I never thought I’d say: I just gave my mom fashion advice. Well — sort of. See, the Laykes are having a big family reunion in Wisconsin in a few weeks… And she just told me how anxious she is to go — because she has no idea what to wear! Now I know the pressure to look “perfect” often falls on the shoulders of women in a way I could never fully understand… So when my mom told me her worries, I decided to consult an expert. I reached out to a friend, Melissa, who just so happens to be a “stylist to the stars” here in Beverly Hills. And of course, she had tons of simple tips on how to look stylish, chic, and youthful no matter your age or budget. My mom loved her suggestions, so I figured I’d share them with you. So here it is — Melissa's super-savvy advice that can make any woman feel like a fashion icon:  Celebrity Stylist’s Top Tips for Women Over 50: Tip #1: Timeless pieces over trendy ones This tip is two-fold, because not only will timeless pieces (like a classy trench coat, blazer, or cashmere sweater) help you build an elegant “capsule wardrobe” that stands the test of time… It also means you won’t have to refresh your closet as often — saving you lots of money in the process. Melissa says this is especially true with jeans. She recommends opting for darker denim rather than a light wash, as lighter jeans tend to be more reminiscent of the 80s and 90s. This can instantly date your entire look, while darker jeans tend to be more flattering and versatile, she says. Now if you’re someone who loves keeping up with fashion trends, Melissa recommends working trendy pieces into your outfit through accessories like jewelry and handbags… That way, you can easily switch them out when trends inevitably change — rather than having to reinvest in a whole new wardrobe. Her favorite “trendy” accessory right now? A red handbag! Tip #2: Try a French tuck Ever heard of a French tuck? Don't worry if you haven't—I was in the same boat! According to Melissa, it looks just like this: Melissa says many of her mature clients are afraid to tuck their tops because they don’t want to draw attention to their midsection… But French tucking actually has the opposite effect. See, leaving shirts untucked can actually accentuate the hips and midsection — the very thing Melissa says most women want to avoid. Plus, it has a tendency to look kind of sloppy. Doing a french tuck, however, gives you the polished effect of a tucked in shirt, while still concealing the bulk of the waist area. Plus, Melissa says it gives that “effortlessly cool, Parisian look” that screams elegance. To implement this tip, simply tuck the front portion of an oversized shirt into the front of high rise bottoms. The back and sides of the shirt will remain untucked. Tip #3: Roll up those sleeves Whether you’re wearing a blouse, button down, or blazer, Melissa says this single trick can transform your entire outfit… Making it look younger, sleeker, and more elevated in seconds. How? It’s all about proportions! See, rolling your sleeves brings attention to the wrist area, which is one of the slimmest parts of your body. This visual trick creates a balanced and flattering silhouette. Plus, this technique eliminates any worries about having sleeves that are too long or too short. And of course, Melissa has the perfect trick to keep heavy sleeves from falling down: Roll your sleeves all the way down and place a hair tie around your forearm just under your elbow (the hair tie should be over the fabric of your sleeve). Then, simply fold and scrunch the sleeve over the band so the fabric overlaps and hides the elastic. Do this until you reach the desired sleeve length, and voila! You’ve achieved a sophisticated yet casual look. Melissa recommends using a stretchy, seamless hair tie so it won’t be too tight on your arm… And if you can, try to find one that’s the same color as your garment. That way, it won’t matter if a little bit of the hair tie peeks out. Tip #4: Create Balance and Structure Melissa calls balance the “secret sauce” of good style… Because the right proportions can enhance your best features and create unity in your entire look. Here are some of Melissa’s favorite ways to add balance to any outfit: - Mix your Fits: If you're wearing a loose top, opt for fitted bottoms, and vice versa. This technique creates a stylish silhouette. - Define Your Waist: Embrace pieces that cinch at the waist. Belts, wrap dresses, and tailored blazers accentuate your waist, creating an hourglass shape that's universally flattering. - Layer Strategically: Layering adds depth and helps balance proportions. If you're wearing a shorter top, consider adding a longer cardigan or duster vest to create a cohesive look. - Avoid Bulk: Avoid overly bulky layers or oversized pieces that can overwhelm your frame. Instead, opt for fitted pieces that highlight your shape. - Monochromatic Magic: Monochromatic outfits in the same color family create a long and lean appearance. Experiment with different shades to add depth. Balance ensures that your outfit flows seamlessly, creating a harmonious silhouette. It prevents one part of your ensemble from overpowering the rest for a smart, polished look. Tip #5: Clothes aren’t everything According to Melissa herself: it doesn't matter what you wear as long as you love it... Because confidence is the ultimate accessory. (And that's something that even a fashion amateur like myself can wholeheartedly agree with!) So if there’s a particular outfit that makes you feel gorgeous, but maybe isn’t technically “in style” — Melissa says rock it anyway! At the end of the day, style is about personal expression — so embrace what makes you feel comfortable and confident. After all, celebrating your individuality will never go out of style. So, there you have it, {NAME} — a treasure trove of insights straight from the handbook of a celebrity stylist. Now I’ll share one last thing Melissa and I talked about: You don’t need a brand new wardrobe to implement these tips. You can create fresh looks by simply wearing your existing items in a new way… So don’t be afraid to experiment with your closet. That’s half the fun!
