My makeup artist friend swears by these tricks for women over 50 (youâve got to try them!) {NAME}, youâre going to love todayâs email⦠Because Iâm about to share some of the best makeup tips for mature skin! Now I know what youâre thinking⦠âDr. Layke, what could you possibly know about makeup?â And to that, I would say⦠NOT MUCH. ð However, I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with my good friend Candace for coffee⦠And she just so happens to be one of the biggest celebrity makeup artists in LA! Naturally, I had to pick her brain about any tips I could share with you⦠And she was happy to oblige. So here we go... The top 5 makeup tips for women over 50 â straight from a pro:
Â
Tip #1: Start with a smooth canvas If you find your makeup constantly settles into fine lines â regardless of what makeup products you use â Candace says thereâs likely one culprit to blame: A lack of exfoliation. See, in order for your makeup to sit properly, itâs important to make sure any dead skin and grime is sloughed away first⦠That way, your makeup has a âsmooth canvasâ to adhere to, giving you a flawless finish and longer wear time. The easiest way to accomplish this is by exfoliating once a week. (Regular exfoliation also helps dull skin look brighter and more awake â with or without makeup.) But remember: Itâs important to use the right exfoliator for your skin type. See, many exfoliators are much too harsh â especially for mature skin⦠So if your exfoliator contains pieces of nuts, shells, or anything too abrasive, itâll likely cause micro-tears in your skin â potentially making you look OLDER. I was flattered to hear Candance often recommends [our Skin Renewing Polish to her clients.]() The crystal particles in this glow-maximizing formula are so fine, it almost feels like a putty â making it the perfect pick for sensitive or mature skin. Not to mention, this formula can be used all over your body to get smooth, glowing, summer-ready skin. Tip #2: Perfectly primed skin Now that your skin is prepped and ready for makeup⦠Itâs time to apply primer. This step is lesser-known, but Candace says itâs essential if you want your make to go on smoothly and last all day. PLUS, primer helps lock-in any of the serums, concentrates, and moisturizers you used before applying makeup! For mature skin, Candace says a hydrating primer is best for plumping and smoothing the skin BEFORE layering any products over it⦠So look for primer formulas containing hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, or niacinamide for the perfect base. Tip #3: Use a light-reflecting concealer As we age, the skin around our eyes becomes thinner â giving us a hollowed-out, sunken appearance. And of course, those pesky dark circles can accentuate any puffiness or under-eye bags. Thatâs where light-reflecting concealer comes in. These formulas can bounce light off the skin, creating a brighter, more luminous appearance. The trick is to use the right product with proper application. Candace recommends looking for brightening ingredients like:
- Mica: This mineral is commonly used in cosmetics for its light-reflecting properties. It can help to create a soft, luminous glow and reduce the appearance of dark circles and fine lines. - Titanium Dioxide: Another mineral that can help to reflect light and create a brighter, more radiant appearance, titanium dioxide is also commonly used as an ingredient in mineral sunscreens â a safer alternative to chemical ones. - Silica: This natural mineral can help to absorb excess oil and create a smooth, soft-focus finish. And when itâs used in small amounts, it can also help to reflect light and create a subtle glow.
To get the most out of your light-reflecting concealer, use a shade slightly lighter than your skin tone â and apply it after your foundation with a light hand. Use a small brush or your ring finger to blend the concealer gently into the skin, making sure to blend the edges to avoid any harsh lines. Tip #4: Less is more Candace made me PROMISE to tell you this: Heavy, full-coverage foundations only settle into fine lines, wrinkles, and enlarged pores⦠Emphasizing imperfections and making your skin look OLDER. Instead, she recommends selecting a light-to-medium coverage foundation. In her experience, liquid or cream foundations with a dewy finish are best for achieving a youthful, radiant look. When applying liquid or cream products, Candace recommends using a damp beauty blender or brush for a natural, flawless finish. Matte or powder formulas, on the other hand, can be overly drying and harsh on mature skin. (She says this is true for other products like blush, highlighters, and bronzer, too. However, if you really love your powders â thatâs okay. Just use a light hand, and always finish your makeup [with a moisturizing mist like this one to rehydrate your look.)]() Remember, the key to enhancing your beauty with makeup is to keep it natural and subtle. You don't need to go overboard with bold colors or dramatic techniques. Instead, focus on creating a fresh, radiant look that highlights your best features and makes you feel confident and beautiful. Tip #5: Donât forget the brows! Since eyebrows become more sparse as we age, filling them in becomes all the more important. (Think about it⦠If your foundation creates the âcanvasâ for the rest of your makeup, eyebrows are like the frame. Your final look wouldnât be complete without them!) Here are Candaceâs tips on how to achieve perfect, natural-looking brows every time:
- Choose the right color: When filling in your brows, it's important to choose a color that matches your natural eyebrow color. If your eyebrows are very light or gray, consider going one or two shades darker to create more definition. - Use a light hand: Use short, feather-like strokes to create the illusion of natural eyebrow hairs. You can always add more color and definition later, but it's easier to build up the color gradually than to remove excess product. - Define the shape: Use a spoolie brush to brush your eyebrow hairs upward and outward. Then, use a brow pencil or powder to define the shape of your eyebrows. Start by filling in any sparse areas or gaps, and then work on creating a more defined arch and tail. - Set with a brow gel: Use a clear or tinted brow gel to set your eyebrows in place and keep them looking groomed throughout the day. If your brow hairs are sparse or over-plucked, consider using a brow serum to help fill them out. [(This one works wonders!)]()
Practice makes perfect, so don't be afraid to experiment with different products and techniques until you find a method that works best for you.
