Let's talk about the dark side of cosmetic treatments — and how to avoid them {NAME} — today we're diving into the DARK SIDE of cosmetic treatments... Because while they can be incredible for your overall look… They’ve also spurred some very concerning headlines lately — and it’s crucial you know the whole story. For instance, at least 3 people contracted HIV after getting a “vampire facial” at an unlicensed spa in New Mexico. (This treatment involves drawing blood from your arm, then infusing the plasma into your face to stimulate elastin and collagen production.)1 Meanwhile, med spas in multiple states used counterfeit Botox purchased from the black market… Sending 11 people to the hospital with botulism.2 These situations are horrific, and while I certainly don’t mean to scare you… They show just how important it is to verify a med spa’s legitimacy before a needle ever touches your skin. So today, let’s talk about the questions to ask before you book an appointment… Red flags to avoid… And tell-tale signs it’s time to get the heck out of there. Ă‚ #1:Ă‚ Verify licensing When it comes to med spas, requirements for health regulations and licensing vary from state to state. In most states, injections MUST be done by someone with a medical license — like a doctor or nurse… But in some states, estheticians with advanced training can administer them too. With that said, it’s a good idea to know your state’s requirements, and verify the med spa you’re considering follows them. The National Medspa Association works with thousands of med spas across the country to ensure they’re meeting licensing requirements. You can check if your med spa is one of them by using [this search tool.]( Ă‚ #2: Ask that materials be drawn in front of you Ă‚ If you’re getting injections, you should know what’s going into your body.... So don’t be afraid to ask to see the vial, and have it be drawn in front of you. No ethical place would have problem with this, and if they make a fuss — something’s fishy. On that note, make sure the product being used is a brand-name, FDA-approved medication. This is particularly important with fat-dissolving injections, since there are so many “unapproved” versions out there, which can lead to nasty infections.3 The only fat-dissolving injection currently approved by the FDA is Kybella (and only for use under the chin). Common unapproved injectables include: - Aqualyx - Lipodissolve - Lipo Lab - Kabelline #3:Ă‚ Make sure a medical professional is there Ă‚ Even in the cleanest and safest of conditions… Complications can happen. So even if a doctor or nurse isn’t the one administering your treatment, you’ll want to make sure they’re on-site — in case you have an allergic reaction or other issue. Ă‚ #4:Ă‚ Check for cleanliness Ă‚ Give med spas the same consideration you’d give a doctor’s office. On top of the space being clean and sterile, staff should also use antibacterial spray on your skin before they inject you. Likewise — their hands should be clean, too… Which means they shouldn’t be holding their phone to take pictures or videos as they perform the treatment. Remember, it’s never rude to ask them to wash their hands before touching you. Your health depends on it. {NAME} — I know today’s message is a bit more serious than usual… But everyone needs to know this information, so please feel free to forward it to anyone considering a cosmetic treatment. With that said, there are plenty of med spas that operate safely. So by asking the right questions, advocating for yourself, and knowing what red flags to look out for… You can go into your appointment with confidence. After all — knowledge is power, right?
