Avoid painful in-growns, irritation, and skin infections with these 3 easy hair-plucking tips {NAME}, Nowadays, there are endless ways to remove unwanted hair. Lasers. Waxing. Threading. Sugaring. Heck, even electrolysis â where electrical currents are used to destroy the hair root. And as amazing as it is to see just how much hair removal technology has developed⦠Thereâs one simple, time-tested method I get asked about more than any other: PLUCKING. More specifically, many clients want to knowâ¦
âIs there a right, and a wrong way to pluck?â
It's is a fantastic question! After all, thereâs no doubt a quick tweeze can help you maintain the perfect brows, or even remedy a few rogue hairs sprouting on your chin, upper lip, or jawline. (Which is totally normal, by the way.) HOWEVER â if you don't wield the right tools or technique, tweezing can spell trouble for your skin... And be downright painful! You see, not only might improper plucking leave your skin looking angry, swollen, and sore... It could also open the door for nasty bacteria to invade your skin, prompt ingrown hairs, and even cause micro-tears. Thankfully, there's a safe way to tweeze those straysâjust stick to THESE 3 steps: #1: Inspect your gear Got tweezers that are ancient, blunt, or poor quality? Chances are, they WON'T grab those teeny tiny facial hairs properly. This can lead to one of two things:
- Either you wind up breaking the hair above the skin's surface â leaving you with unsightly âstubbleââ¦
- Or, the hair will break below the skinâs surface and start to grow back sideways â which can lead to painful ingrown hairs. And if your tweezers are dirty, you're inviting trouble like irritated follicles or worse... infection. So, before and after each use, clean them with some rubbing alcohol â and opt for quality. (I recommend angled-tip tweezers, as they make isolating, grabbing, and yanking that hair in one go much easier.) That said, before you start tweezing, there is one step you absolute CANNOT skip: #2: Prep your skin Starting with clean tweezers is key â but so is starting with fresh, prepped skin. Not only does this reduce the risk of gunk transferring from your skin to your tools... It also makes the whole plucking ordeal way smoother. Start by washing your face, then place a warm washcloth on the spots you're targeting. (Just dampen a fresh cloth and nuke it for 20-30 seconds.) This opens up your pores, making hair removal less of a hassle. Then, pat your face dry to prevent slippage, and you're ready to pluck! #3: Perfect your technique When it comes to plucking, there's one golden rule you MUST know: Always yank in the same direction the hair grows â never against it. Pulling against the grain can lead to tugging or even skin breakage... But tweeze with the grain, and the hair's less likely to put up a fight. So, gently stretch your skin with one hand... Grab the hair at the base, or as close as you can get without pinching skin... And in one swift move, gently pull in the right direction. TIP: If you have a difficult time singling out those super fine hairs â simply dust a little baby powder on your skin to help make them more noticeable and easier to grab.
