an update on gun violence legislation

[ Ami wanted me to send you a quick legislative update today, {NAME}, on gun violence prevention and Democrats’ efforts to combat it once and for all. We’ve seen horrifying mass shootings in the country at an escalated rate, some fueled by racism — like the Atlanta shooting of 8 people, including 6 AAPI women. These tragedies are why Democrats are working to take swift action to combat gun violence. President Biden recently released a six-point action plan for addressing this relentless issue at the executive level, including measures such as pushing for “red flag” laws to petition to temporarily take firearms from those who are proven a danger to themselves or others and community intervention programs. It will also lay the groundwork for banning “ghost guns” which have caused several shootings in the U.S. In the Democratic House, we’ve passed two bills to close loopholes in the background check systems for gun purchases and are working to close “boyfriend” loopholes that allow abusers to possess assault weapons. Now, it’s up to the Senate to pass these critical bills, where we have a much smaller majority and will be a much steeper climb. That’s where you come in, {NAME}. More than 90% of Americans support universal background checks, but Republicans refuse to act.
