Not long ago I was asked about an email I wrote mocking the hell out of a troll. The guy asking wondered why I bother giving these idiots attention? i.e., âWhy feed them?â he asked. And itâs a good question. In many cases, I think most people should ignore their trolls, haters, 1-star reviewers, reply guys, snarky drive-by commenters, and other assorted jealous losers with too much time on their hands. Thereâs a lot of practicality in simply letting them feed on their own emotions. Basement-dwelling trolling always â without exception in my experience â comes from some sort of emotional damage, jealousy, or self-loathing projection when you break it down or observe them. And if you simply treat them as if they don't exist then eventually they get hungry because you arenât feeding them, and they move on to someone who will feed them. But, at the same time, thereâs gold in them thar hills. Lots of gold. So much gold you might need a Scrooge McDuck money bin to hold it all. And in those cases, ignoring them can be like ignoring someone who is insulting you to a bunch of other self-hating and emotionally-projecting losers like themselves while they are also trying to shove money in your hands. You canât even really be mad at them. If anything you almost might want to thank them so they do more of it. They're trying to give you money, after all.. Iâve lost track of how many sales I can directly attribute to these trolls. In one case, I made enough to start a new house fund (nearly $30k via holding a sale in a Twitter trollâs honor). Not to mention getting a rush of new Email Players subscribers when a fire-breathing feminist trolled me on Facebook. And also when a fat copywriter who looks like GRR Martin (or as one podcaster called him âfat Gandalfâ) flamed me on YouTube, and the list goes on. These schlubs are all money in the bank. It happens almost like clockwork each time someone trolls any of my businesses: 1. The trolls canât control their emotions (thatâs why they troll). 2. Then they lay a big turd attacking, taking cheap shots, and, of course, lying - often accusing you of doing the very thing they are guilty of, not-so-surprisingly. 3. Non-emotionally damaged people watch the flies swarming around the turd they lay and check me or my other businesses out wondering what could possibly be that bad about us to warrant such mindless dumb fugkery from these trolls. 4. Some of them look at the offers. 5. Followed by some looking at becoming paying customers. 6. With some of those customers (over time) then very likely to refer other customers directly or because someone on their list sees them using my offers, gets curious, then heads on over to check it out for themselves⦠And so the cycle goes. Sales donât happen in this magical vacuum the make muney online dorks insist on while they trawl masterminds and Facebook groups all day. The sales process if far more wholistic than that. And trolls are just one of many parts of that âwholeâ that can help grow your business if you but stop fearing them or getting mad at them or trying to match their broken emotional states... and instead start coldly embracing them as the unpaid interns they are for your business. So thatâs why I donât just ignore them. Because I know Iâm probably about to get some new business as soon as I see it. Speaking of trolls: The March Email Players issue is all about what I call: âTroll Pathology 101â It is short on âhow toâ and tactics, though, and long on psychology. I say that because there are people who have trouble learning from a framework and miss even the most obvious & demonstrably profitable ideas insights, thoughts, and methods in non âhow toâ content all the time unless they spelled out to them like they're 5-years-old,. They are the ones who get grumpy whenever I write an issue like this wondering where the how-to is. I used to think there was something wrong with them. But thereâs nothing at all wrong with them. I am convinced they are simply incapable of abstract thought and need everything in a checklist in a paint-by-numbers format. These boys & ghouls should probably be at a job taking orders from a guy in a short sleeve dress shirt with a clipboard in my opinion. Theyâll be happier. Certainly a lot happier than buying anything I sell. Whatever the case: The lessons inside the March issue are plenty. The money that can be made by businesses who understand it great. And the trolls howling at the moon as a result many. In this case, I grab you by the hands and plunge both our arms into the filth and despair of what Iâve learned about the psychology of online trolls over the past 20 years of dealing with them⦠so you can better monetize them along with me. And this is, I believe, especially going to be the case as the economy goes to shyt this year or next (I have no idea when the hammer will drop â but itâs inevitable, regardless of what your favorite cable news channel talking head tells you). When things get bad I suspect the trolls will get especially randy over the thought of downloading their pain, insecurities, and jealousy over their betters. You can ignore them, of course. Or you can profit from them. If you choose profiting from them, then see the March issue.
