I’ve long been a fan of the late Fred Rogers. (i.e., Mister Roger’s Neighborhood) I grew up on his show like a lot of kids. And I’ve also long been especially in awe of how Rogers was a true auteur (Rogauteur?) — like Hitchcock and many of the other famous entertainment boys & ghouls who didn’t just make good movies and TV, they “authored” them, with their personal influence and artistic control reigning supreme. For example, take this from Wikipedia: === “According to King, the process of putting each episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood together was "painstaking"[60] and Rogers's contribution to the program was "astounding". Rogers wrote and edited all the episodes, played the piano and sang for most of the songs, wrote 200 songs and 13 operas, created all the characters (both puppet and human), played most of the major puppet roles, hosted every episode, and produced and approved every detail of the program.[61] The puppets created for the Neighborhood of Make-Believe "included an extraordinary variety of personalities".[62] They were simple puppets but "complex, complicated, and utterly honest beings".[63] In 1971, Rogers formed Family Communications, Inc. (FCI, now The Fred Rogers Company), to produce the Neighborhood, other programs, and non-broadcast materials.[64][65] === A true auteur of entertainment. Just like Alfred Hitchcock, Ray Harryhausen, and Walt Disney. The business world has a bit of this too: Like Steve Jobs with Apple & Stan Lee with Marvel Comics. Not to mention in the advertising industries — like David Ogilvy & Leo Burnett with their world famous agencies, along with the late Marty Edelston who did the same to build his $100 million+ direct response marketing empire Bottom Line, Inc. And, of course, there’s the online marketing industry. You have two kinds of marketers: 1. Those that just swipe, blindly react to “what’s working now”, only follow trends, care what their low information Facebook friends think instead of actively defying them, and do whatever marketing guru whose altar they worship at tells them to do. 2. Those with vision & passion who know where they are going, where they want to lead their customers & clients, and are going to do it their way regardless of if it gets the approval of anyone but those they wish to serve and sell to. This second group are the scant few (almost extinct) who do business by their own code. And who never try to impress the customers but always make the sale anyway. I had to invent a name for this type of marketer to describe it: “Markauteur” If that’s what you aspire to be then my new book could be just what Herr Doktor ordered. Markauteur is all about the visual & design-side of business. Specifically, how to use it to crank out all kinds of cool looking & responsive online sales letters, opt-in pages, product covers, logos, ads, and other marketing design pieces that can have an almost spooky impact on your sales, influence, brand, & status. And don’t worry: No design or software skills are needed. You don’t need to know how to use Photoshop or code a website any more than Steve Jobs did (Bill Gates used to mock Jobs for “not even being a programmer”). Because it ain’t about "doing" the designs & visuals. It’s about “authoring” them — and you can outsource everything else. And I’ve been using the methods inside this book for 20-years to help grow a feening horde of customers & fans inside a visual & design marketing universe they love to buy from and hate to leave.
