Following is a quote from the king of tech himself — the late Steve Jobs. On the surface it’s about the fear of failure. But between the lines, there’s a whole lot more going on. See if you can catch all the context: “[when we started out] we said, you know, we have absolutely nothing to lose. I was 20 years old at the time, Woz was 24 or 25. So we have nothing to lose. I mean, we have no families, no children, uh, no houses. Woz had an old car. You know, I had a Volkswagen van. I mean, all we were going to lose is our cars and the shirts off our back. We had nothing to lose and we had everything to gain when we figured, even if we crash and burn and lose everything, the experience will have been worth 10 times the cost…the only thing you really have in your life is time. And if you invest that time in yourself to have great experiences that are going to enrich you, then you can't possibly lose.” I can already hear the naysayers: “Ben I am in my 40’s with kids, multiple car payments, and a mortgage GTFO.” But those who can grasp context see what’s going on. Oh yeah — they see it. They see that failure is just a result, nothing more, nothing less. They see that time is passing whether they do anything or keep sitting in a constant state of withering analysis paralysis or not. They see that they live in a time Steve Jobs would have killed to have started out in (partly a result of the fruits of his labors, failures, and successes, ironically) where it’s never been easier to grow your existing business and profit like gangbusters with various skills than at any other time in human history. And, of course, they’ll see what Steve was talking about with experiences. I rather enjoy listening to old Steve Jobs talks. And there’s a lot more to the above quote especially for anyone in business. Most of it between the lines, and around the words. If you are looking for them, you’ll see value. And if you’re motivated, you’ll act on them for your business. All right, enough digital bytes for the soul. Jobs was a big inspiration for why I got into the software business at all. And since we’re on the subject of software: If you haven’t checked out the BerserkerMail podcast, it’s some of the best info (in my biased opinion - and I ain't even the host) you’ll ever hear on not just email, but also software, running a company, leadership, curation, and the list goes on of lessons that are also between the lines..
