“If you insist on being different just for the sake of being different, you can always come down in the morning with a sock in your mouth.” So said the late, great ad man Leo Burnett. He ain’t wrong neither. Still, being a contrarian can be incredible positioning in business. But it can also make you look like a dork, too, if you do it wrong. Especially those who do it just for the sake of it, and don’t even realize why they’re doing it other than they think it makes them look edgy & cool. Or because they see everyone else talking about being contrarian and bragging about it and think they have to do the same. Or because they think it will make them look unique in a crowded marketplace of “me too” businesses all saying the same thing to the same people selling the same kind of products. But 9 out of 10 times, the result is more like this: A breathing parody of themselves - not unlike when 95% of the chicks at a party were dressing up as the Joker’s woman Harley Quinn for Halloween, while insisting “I’m not like those other girls” to everyone. Whatever the case, I do have some advice nobody ever asked for: 1. Don’t try to be contrarian, and instead simply be a slave to the fundamentals of whatever it is you do, teach, sell, market, coach, etc. Example: Over the years most of the things certain people have said I am contrarian with (multiple emails in a day, selling one offer at a time, “A-pile” looking emails, focusing on repelling vs attracting, no social share buttons on my site, ignoring vanity metrics like opens, not believing surveys, not caring about "what's working now", etc, the list is long but distinguished…) are not contrarian at all. They are simply a result of ruthlessly following the laws of direct marketing & human psychology as I've learned them. Doing that almost automatically makes you contrarian these days. Go figure. 2. Sell using the info inside my new book “NOfluence.” I doubt anyone will accuse you of being contrarian. But your marketing will almost certainly be contrarian by “default" simply because so few are likely doing it in your niche, industry, market, or product category (there may be exceptions). But, a warning: There is nothing "new" about what my book teaches. The info inside has been around forever. In some ways, entire nations have been founded upon parts of what it teaches. But if everyone used it, there'd be a whole lot more selling going on. And I predict this will especially be the case in the coming weeks, months, and years as people start pulling back on spending, and curating what they buy a lot more aggressively. We shalt see. Whatever the case: After “NOfluence” launches it will sell for $600.00. But during this week’s launch (until Friday, August 18 at midnight EDT - check your time zones if you don't want to miss it, you been warned...) you can have it at a $100.00 discount (so for $500.00 instead of $600.00) off the listed price at the link below.
