Back in April I wrote the following about freelancers building a waiting list: === One of the best things a freelancer (copywriter, coach, etc) can do is, arrange it so you have so many clients wanting to hire your business, that you have to create a waiting list. There are both psychological and obvious practical reasons for doing this. Psychologically, it tells would-be clients youâre high value. That means higher fees, less interference, more faith in you, and a host of other benefits. Thereâs also a social proof thing going on: Just like a lot of girls donât want a guy no other girl wants (â⦠whatâs wrong with him?â) a lot of clients donât really want to hire someone nobody else wants to hire. On the other hand, the fact your freelancing business is so in demand, with clients competing for your time, will almost certainly make you automatically more desirable to certain clients. And practically, it means more job security. Think of it this way: Letâs say your freelance business is booked solid with clients. The sun is shining, the pigeons are crowing, and youâre basically in copywriting hog heaven. Then, for whatever reason, one of your clients drops out. Maybe they went out of business. Or maybe they found someone they think is better. Or, maybe theyâre just flaky. Or ran out of money. Or any number of things. Whatever the case, no need to panic. That is, if you have a waiting list of potential clients who you've built a relationship with via demonstrating your knowledge and abilities to via email over time like I teach. Simply send an email to them that says something like: âI have an opening for another client. But, itâs first come, first served. With over x number of potential clients opted in to this special list, that spot could very realistically vanish before the hour is through. Hereâs how to contact meâ¦â === To which long time Email Players subscriber Tracey Hausel replied: âWhen I worked independently as a educational diagnostician (in Delaware Iâm not allowed to call myself a school psychologist outside of a public school without being a licensed clinical psychologist), I would tell parents to only send there kids to private schools with a waiting list. The ones without waiting lists kept kids with behavior problems because they needed the tuition. Not the same from the freelancers side but similar to those who would be hiring freelancers.â And so it goes. Marketing really is a game of curation. He or she who curates best wins. You can cater to and attract the leads with âbehavior problemsâ (trolls, complainers, those who nag, reply guys, people who are so cheap theyâd eat a dollar and crap out a penny⦠whatever it isâ¦) or you can gather as many of what Gary Halbert called âPlayers with Moneyâ to your list, and inside your world, as possible. If you want more of the former I donât know what to tell you. Just listen to whatever the NPCs pounding their chests on social media say. If you want the latter I suggest checking out the free PDF Iâve been talking about the last 2 days. Email Players subscriber Justin Goff wrote it for that purpose: To show his boys & ghouls how to build a list full of players with money who buy from you month after month and year after year. The kind who will use what you offer. Grow with what you offer. And, ideally, tell everyone else about you and your offers over time. Itâs not going to show you any secret ninja tricks. Instead itâs all about the approach he uses. Get the approach wrong and nothing else counts. Get it right, and it probably wonât matter what list-building methodology you use. (Free, paid, whatever) Following is technically an affiliate link for tracking purposes. But I donât get paid any money whether you get his free PDF or not. We just like to help each other out from time to time out of mutual respect.
