The Saad truth about social media virtue signalers

One of the more useful rules I used to have in my old elBenbo’s Lair Facebook group that helped get it round-the-clock engagement — and my business sometimes round-the-clock sales — was by clamping down and removing anyone participating in the practice known as: “Virtue Signaling” If you don’t know what that means: Virtue signaling is when someone publicly declares their support or disdain for something just to show how virtuous they are to everyone watching for props, likes, applause, or any other kind of approval from a group. It’s rampant in churches, politics, cable news, and especially on social media. And it’s certainly nothing new. Jesus even railed against it 2,000+ years ago about not practicing righteousness in front of people just to be seen doing it, or telling everyone about how they just gave to the needy to show what a holy guy they are, or not looking gloomy when fasting so everyone can see how much they suffer for their faith, etc. More: I’m far from the only person to have noticed how many virtue signalers actually have contempt for the very people & issues they Virtue Signal about. Simply look at the number of #metoo supporting celebrities & self-described “male feminists” who get accused of and charged with rape, assault, & other horrible crimes. Some more examples: * Politicians railing against “global warming” while flying around in private jets and owning houses that use many times more power than comparable homes. * Zoomers lecturing the world about child labor, capitalism, and the glories of socialism on their child labor-created $900 iPhones while wearing clothing made via child labor in China. * Prominent people donating to and doing photoshoots for the press at supposedly anti-human trafficking events while engaging in or perpetuating human trafficking. It's also rooted in cowardice. A couple years back I read a take on this is an article written by Gad Saad. He perfectly explains the psychology behind Virtue Signaling using a certain squishy virtue signaling Hollywood celebrity as example. He summed it up like this: “Your current stances are rooted in vacuous empty signaling rooted in a desire to belong in Hollywood. It takes zero courage to hold your stances within the entertainment ecosystem.” That is EXACTLY why I banned virtue signaling in my old elBenbo’s Lair group. It’s inherently gutless. Those pounding their chests shrieking “unfriend me if you voted for Trump!” on Facebook — a platform that regularly canceled Trump supporters, including my business partner Troy Broussard’s 83-year old mother who simply voiced her support, if that tells you something — ain’t brave. It’s the exact opposite of courage. Even if someone objects, the rest of the virtue signalers will jump in to help. As will the platform itself, in many cases. And that’s why the virtue signaling types didn’t last too long up in elBenbo’s Lair. It was the exact opposite of a “safe place” because one couldn’t go in there and just start dropping value, lecture people on their pet social justice causes, or really get away with saying anything that wouldn’t be challenged by someone. That’s why I believe it was such a legitimately valuable place. And it’s also why it got testimonials like this one from grave digger-turned-world-class psychologist Pete Menlo: === Ben groks what the psychologist Rollo May said, ‘The opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice, it is conformity.’ From his pulpit, Ben preaches and bellows, ‘Stop conforming, think for yourself, take the road less traveled.’ Too many people choose death over thinking for themselves. Not literal death like when I scooped the last shovel of dirt on the grave. But killing off parts of themselves to fit in, be accepted, do whatever it takes to avoid scorn, ridicule, rejection. They do what I have done too often in my own life. Give up on what makes me alive. These ‘small compromises’ done often enough can lead to becoming a zombie without the fearsome looks. I think there is no other place on this planet that says ‘We kill you (banishment) if you bring value to our group.’ The Lair forces you to think differently. === I had many Laws up in elBenbo’s Lair.
