A few years ago, I got to talking to my pal Robert Bruce about life, business, and marketing as is what always happens when I talk with him. And he told me about a local fisherman up in his neck of the woods who had once started a print newsletter for fisherman. And, he told me about these particularly interesting facts: * The newsletter circulation is 5k subscribers. * Each issue has 21 spots for paid ads. * Each spot costs $500. * He has a waiting list of people wanting to advertise in it. Now, letâs do the math: Twenty one advertising spots at $500 a pop = $10,500 per month. Just for writing about his passion to a hot market of receptive leads. Now, take that and apply to your email list. Something I have, so far, done twice. The first time was back in 2020 where I sold five spots for $500 a pop. Thus, my business made $2,500 for essentially writing an email promoting the idea, and then copy & pasting the ads my customers wrote into an email I sent to my list. Thatâs $2,500 without creating or selling a âproductâ, without really doing much work, and without any risk to my business whatsoever assuming the customers had a good experience (which 4 of the 5 did). Fast forward to just last month: I did the exact same thing again. Except this time I charged 5-10 times more. (Depending on whether the customer was an Email Players subscriber or not) And I sold two spots at $2,500 and one at $5,000. i.e., $10,000. That's hardly promoting it (5 emails I think), and certainly not as hard as I usually sell a special offer - where I often will send 15 - 20 emails over the same time period. I am juggling finishing up my novel and some other stuff, and simply didn't have the ambition to sell it any harder. If I had, I am pretty sure I could have doubled those numbers or come close to it. And that's without selling any âproductâ I had to produce. And with minimum writing or work involved on my end. And much of the work I did I can simply recycle again in the future. Now, let be very clear here: Not every business can charge that much. Most I know would have to charge less, and some could probably charge much more. It just depends on two main factors: 1. How big your list is 2. How responsive/engaged/high quality your list is 3. How badly people would jump to advertise to your list A list of 40 leads probably wonât have much luck with this. Although you never know until you try. But a list of 4,000 leads, who are hyper engaged (i.e., they use my Email Players methodology), and like to buy could charge a bundle if they did a good enough job selling it. In my opinion, someone who is lazy or just likes to write content and hates âsellingâ could potentially do what the fisherman above did â and just write about their passion each day while financing their business with classified ads and not have to sully their sparkling hands with sales pitches at all. Whatâs ironic about this: Itâs as sold as online marketing itself. I remember buying little $35 and $50 ads in email newsletters 20 years ago. Nowadays, I donât see a lot of them.
