Earlier this year the BBC wrote about the darkside of being a so-called "influencer." Here are a few lumps of coal from the article: “The threat of invisibility is a constant source of insecurity for influencers, who are under constant pressure to feed platforms with content. If they don’t, they may be “punished” by the algorithm – having posts hidden or displayed lower down on search results.” “Constant online presence ultimately leads to one of the most pervasive issues of the influencer industry: mental health concerns. . .this can lead to influencers working excessively and facing mental health issues such as burnout. “Online visibility also places content creators at risk of significant online abuse. . .The potential of online abuse can lead to mental and physical health issues, including depression, anxiety, body dysmorphia and eating disorders.” Those are just a few of the highlights. Yeesh. Eating disorders. Depression. Anxiety. Body dysmorphia, burnout, 24/7 "fight or flight" from being terrified of losing relevancy, chasing algorithms... plus the constant threat of being canceled for saying the wrong words or thinking the wrong thoughts the article left out. So much simpler to just: * Build an email list you can back up (thus, you "own" it) * Send it emails they want to read, selling offers they want to buy * Sell those buyers something else But that's SO 1994… It’s also the main thrust behind the “if shyt hits the fan” business plan I write about inside the snowy-white pages of the upcoming December Email Players issue. There isn't anything exciting or sexy inside, and is all "meat & potatoes" info. (Let the goo-roo fanboy take note.) But it is literally exactly what I’d do if I either had to start over from scratch, or was motivated enough to add yet another “wing” onto my existing business. I talk about the market I’d target, what I’d sell to them (and, believe it or not, it would not involve me creating any products), how I’d get them on my list, the buying sequence I’d most likely use, how I’d research it, and my entire thought process from A-to-Zygotically — all laid out, naked, with everything dangling in the wind. I suppose someone could “lift” it as-is. But I would not recommend that unless you shared the exact same interests as me. What’s better is to take, adapt, and use it for your interests and passions.
