Here’s a story I am not sure I’ve told before: But one of my main “inspirations” for selling high-ticket books, newsletters, and other offers was the late, great marketer Jim Straw. Jim Straw was a true entrepreneur. He did it all — from owning a bank to owning an import/export business, to online affiliate marketing which he was exceptionally good at. I remember the offer that flipped me to the Straw side: His $995.00 eBook. 160-pages, pdf, nothing physical or particularly meaty. And last I heard, he moved 12 to 15 copies per month. And with only an ugly plain text sales page, daily emails, & PayPal. No printing or fulfillment costs. No shipping headaches, and no hard costs. He also did not offer refund guarantees, either. And he sold them offers with the smooth confidence of a true professional, without flinching, apology, or explanation. It just don’t get more efficient than that. How did he “get away” with all that? There were a lot of things he did. Some of which I include in the November Email Players issue. But the main one I write about in that issue is on pages 5-7, where I show what I believe to be the #1 sales weapon he wielded. It’s not really a “tactic" thought (let the goo-roo fanboy take note). And it’s certainly not some clever turn-of-phrase or sales choke hold. No, Mr. Straw did something else. Something far more psychological & emotional than tactical. And what he did has guided my own high-ticket selling adventures like a gigantic beacon in the night that only I see, and my schlubby copycats who just follow in my tire tracks (waiting for me to sell something then trying to copy it, i.e., the whole “What’s working now!” shtick) still have not caught on to after all these years. Something else: There are few things one can do in marketing for getting more attention, more sales, and more consumption that work as well, much less better, than what Jim Straw did to move his $1,000 eBooks.
