A brand spanking newbie once asked Yours Crotchety a question, taking advantage of that perk of being an “Email Players” subscriber. It took me about 15 seconds to type an email back with what to do. And she replied with: “A little disappointed in your answers to my questions. One of my primary reasons for subscribing.” I have no doubt about her being sincerely disappointed, too. Because it was obvious she was looking for some kind of checklist or instructions of things to do that only ruthlessly learning & applying the fundamentals of marketing would give her. Fundamentals which took all of one or two sentences for me to deliver, but years to learn and build upon. Think your humble daily email horror host here is being too harsh? Here were her questions: “What is your best recommendation for someone marketing more than one product or program of which one is a network marketing opportunity without using paid ads?” and... “When do you know you can add other niches as you have done?” Not “bad” questions, necessarily. But they showed zero grasp of the basics of direct marketing. Thus, my answers were essentially telling her to do some very basic things that, had she done them instead of stewing about being disappointed, she'd have been well on her way. Instead she flitted back off to the goo-roo casino slot machines. The point: People disappointed in & eschewing the fundamentals really should stay far away from me. I have literally nothing to offer them. Nor do I pander to them, like dealing with them, or care to sell to them. If someone in business isn’t educated on the basics of direct response marketing, and especially if they don’t realize there is no “check list” of tips that will ever replace getting out there, mailing your list each day, receiving & interpreting the information you get back, and gaining experience — the only way she could really get her question answered since it’s completely reliant on her and not my opinion — they will be a lot happier chasing another “hack” than paying me to basically tell them to learn how to properly punch before even thinking about how to do Pai Mei’s 5 point palm exploding heart technique. New product junkies & goo-roo fanboys in business probably bristled reading this. Good. If anything I'd be disappointed if they didn't. They have no place in my list if they can’t be bothered to learn the basics. One last thing. I have long been convinced — and been proven correct time, and time, and time again — that simply learning, understanding, applying, and mastering the basics & fundamentals of marketing, copywriting, persuasion is probably the most powerful marketing “hack” you can ever possibly possess. Which is why you’ll probably never hear it trumpeted at a mastermind. Or from your favorite goo-roo pounding his chest on stage at a seminar. Or from a Facebook philosopher desperate for likes. The irony truly writes itself. All right, enough. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
