I've admitted this many times: One of my favorite authors of influence & persuasion is the late Jim Camp. The guy wasn’t called “The World’s Most Feared Negotiator” for nuttin’. The way I understand it, he routinely had multiple billion dollar negotiations going on simultaneously. And he was very much a student of how the brain and neurology works in the theater of negotiation — which, at the end of the day, is all marketing is: Negotiation. Anyway, one of the big things he would teach: The human brain absolutely hates indecision. It can’t cope with it. It basically throws people into complete chaos. The whole “wanting closure” thing ain’t no mere trope. And this is why he’d do things in his negotiations to make sure people had to ante up — at every stage — where it was “yes, let’s proceed to the next phase” or “no, I am not interested.” Jim hated “maybe” with the passion of a thousand internet trolls. And he simply wouldn’t tolerate it. If someone remained in the state of maybe he simply would end the negotiation. This is not just good for your psyche, but for the psyches of all parties involved. It can also be good for your business' sales, too, with emails, sales copy, and in all your other marketing. And it just so happens to be something I talk about in the September “Email Players” issue on pages 13 & 14. However, a word of caution for the wild-eyed goo-roo fanboy: There is certainly nothing “new” about what I teach about this. But what I teach can give a different perspective on things for the non-deciding. Plus, it’s not only something that can get your business' customers off the fence about whether to buy from you or not (i.e., make ‘em ante up), but if you apply it to your own life, it can help you get rid of the indecision disease of the mind, too.
