Following is a cautionary tale that may not have any relevance to your life whatsoever. On the other hand, it could very well save your life. Whatever the case, here is the story: Back in 1998 I heard an audio cassette training program (yes, audio cassetteâ¦) created by an extremely successful guy in MLM named Chris McGarahan. And in these cassettes he talked about being stressed out in his sales manager job to the point of almost dying. In his case, what happened was one night he wasnât feeling well after a particularly grueling & stressful day. And he was pacing around, knowing something was âoffâ in his body, and told his wife to call someone, because something was obviously wrong. Soon afterwards the paramedics came. And sure enough, something was askew. In fact, they told him his heart was (literally) trying to beat itself out of his chest! At least, that's the way I remember him telling it. After which the paramedics told him: âThis is so common, we see this almost every day.â Understandably, he walked into his job the next day and quit. Anyway, the story was about how he got into the MLM industry. But even after I liberated myself from that industry, and got into copywriting and direct response marketing, it helped guide me on how to build my own business. The last thing I wanted was to have a super successful businessâ¦. but that was also so stressful my heart would try to burst out of my chest like a Xenomorph from the âAlienâ movies some day. All of which is somewhat ironic. Because I work more hours than I ever have in my life now. Six (sometimes seven) days per week, I am up and at âem by 3:00 am. In my office working by 3:30 am. Then, on a 10-mile walk a few hours later 3-5 of those days, during which I often also get a lot of work done on my phone, sometimes even stopping to tap out emails on it. After that, I eat and maybe run some errands. Then, itâs back to work again in the afternoon until hitting the sack. But I donât have any heart-beating-out-of-my-chest moments. And, in fact, every time I have my blood pressure checked itâs near perfect. The secret to grinding without groaning? Loving what you do, of course. I donât see my long days as grueling work. Itâs all an exciting adventure. As I write this email, I am having a blast. Much of the time I have (according to those who have observed me do my thing) a big sappy smile on my face, and often amusing myself while writing. This applies to writing emails or sales copy. Or long 400+ page content-heavy books. Or turning my novels into comic scripts (my latest adventure). Or working on my soon-to-be reborn social media page. Itâs all fun for the most part. Yes, sometimes there is some ticky-tack nonsense I donât want to deal with â like prepping my books for the bookkeeper, or having to be on the phone (I loathe the phone), or some other task I dislike but have to do as a grownup who pays taxes. But as far as my work, I canât get enough of it. I want to do it, and if anything get stressed when I canât do it. Which brings me to the point of all this: Thereâs something to be said about making sure you are (1) in a niche youâre passionate about, (2) selling products you canât wait to get into peoplesâ hands, and (3) dealing with customers and a market you want to help and like dealing with. Those 3 things may sound laughably simple. But, most people would be shocked by how few businesses have all three in place. Far too many just get into a niche because âthatâs where the money is.â Sell products because âthatâs what I heard people are buying.â And deal with customers they despise because âI have a mortgage and have no choice right now, but some dayâ¦â Bah! Horse sheeyat. You only get one life, Chuckles. Do you want to spend your days selling products that bore you, in a niche that bores you, to a market that bores you dealing with them? All right, enough cautionary tales for the soul. I may work a nearly 10 hour workday a lot by choice. But the foundation of what I do, and how I built it, is actually in my 10-Minute Workday program AWAI sells. I did the short workday thing for about 6 years until I got bored with it and my ambitions grew way beyond what the program could do for me. But the foundation of what I did and built my current business on is inside that program. No, it does NOT happen overnight. Prepare to spend weeks and probably many months building it up correctly, and having the patience to endure some learning curves if you aren't already a proficient marketer and/or copywriter, and are just starting out. And yes, itâs very expensive. This ain't an eBook on Clickbank. But if you use it and are successful with getting a pleasantly short workday set up, you may see farther like I ultimately did, and build it higher and further from there, and spend lots more time on it. Or not. But at the very least, your heart won't beat out of your chest.
