A true if admittedly morbid story: Once upon a time, I wrote an email about the rise of what I call the “Alt-copywriter” — client-less, less-stress, fewer work hours, etc. Clients optional. And the late, great Gene Schwartz was my role model for growing just such a biz. The next day’s email: Was about avoiding dying at the desk. Specifically, by not working yourself to an early grave. To which A-list copywriter & Email Players subscriber Kim Krause Schwalm replied, and told me Gene Schwartz literally DID die at the desk… while working on a promo for Phillip's Publishing! (She worked there at the time.) Got to hand it to Mr. Schwartz. He literally died doing what he loved… Yes, a bit morbid. But I suspect anyone who has listened to the Gene Schwartz recording I’ve been selling all week would agree that of all people he’d probably have gotten a kick out of the fact that someone wrote a sales pitch around the event. This is the guy, after all, who wrote some of the most bombastic headlines, claims, and direct mail pieces ever penned. He once even likened his copy to the movie “Lethal Weapon” — with the same cadence as the script (giant explosion, followed by short bit of meaningless dialogue, a dead body falling out of the sky, another five minutes of meaningless dialogue, etc etc etc) saying every claim is a head smashing into a windshield.
