I got to thinking about this subject recently. Mostly, when thinking of what books I will assign Willis to read during his homeschooling. As the only way Willis will ever set foot in an public school is to buy the building later on when he’s a wealthy adult, then condemn and set fire to it, after which he will salt the ground around it. It’s the only way to be sure… Anyway, the list of books I wish someone had handed me is long but distinguished. But here are a few off the top of my head: * The Circadian Code (Satchin Panda PhD) — I am positive reading and following this book would have prevented a lot of stupid nagging health problems I and many other GenX kids who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s have experienced since. Boomers too. But the boomers I know mostly don’t seem interested in anything that doesn’t come in a syringe or bottle of pills. In some ways this is the single greatest health book I’ve ever read. And I’ve read a lot of ‘em. * Be Useful (Arnold Schwartzzenklddjljdger) — I normally don’t read “self-help” books. But after reading Dan Kennedy’s glowing review of it I did one of my obligatory 10 read of it. And it is indeed brilliant outside of Arnold’s bragging about his own amusingly naive trust of our openly corrupt government and media. That, in a way, is a lesson embedded in the book that he probably did not intend to teach… * Sly Moves (Sylvester Stallone) — The first part of the book alone is almost a perfect sales letter “template” in many ways, for reasons I think will be obvious to copywriters who have lots of real world experience writing ads. Fun fact: a single SENTENCE in this book inspired not only an entire Email Players issue this year, but also nearly the entire funnel teaching (which is half the program) in my upcoming re-brand/redo/re-title of my 10-Minute Workday offer with AWAI — which is going to be 95% a totally different product (with a totally different title) when it launches in a few months. * Lead The Field (Earl Nightingale, not a “book” technically, but whatever) — If teen me had been handed this program instead of a bunch of audio cassette tapes with one good song on them, well, I think I’d have a business with 1000 times more scope, influence, and impact. I will never know. But it is that good, that important, that practical. * The Boron Letters (Gary Halbert) — the greatest direct marketing crib sheet you can find anywhere, for any price. The health advice is a bit outdated and his opinion on the Bible is nonsensical. But the direct marketing info is second to none, and I recommend ALL newbies start with that when they ask me what to read. * The System Club Letters — I wrote about this just last week, so ditto what I said then. But I will just say I’ve read it well over 50 times, and still read it regularly. The depth in Ken's book is phenomenal. There are many more books I could add to this list. But those alone will keep you busy for a while. Something else: I would of course have had my younger self grow a business using BerserkerMail. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
