Since I was picking on concubines a few hours ago anyway: Following is another disturbing lesson about selling & persuasion found in the Book of Judges. The end of the book tells a story about a wandering Levite (the âpriestâ tribe of ancient Israel) and how his concubine was viciously raped to death by some psychopaths who lived amongst the Benjamites. The Levite (understandably) wanted justice. But due to the times (mass anarchy and moral apathy), he knew he had to do something radical to get anyone to care. So what did he do? Beg for help? Wrangle up a posse? Make a bulleted list of all the benefits to the community of finding these evil rapscallions and bringing them to justice to whoever would listen to him? No, he was a tad more radical than that. What this guy did was, he cut his concubineâs corpse into 12 pieces. And then⦠sent a piece to the leaders of each of the 12 tribes of Israel! Now thatâs impact, baby. There was certainly no ignoring the message. There were also no objections, no questions, and no hemming & hawing â just quick and direct action taken that resulted in a very violent and bloody civil war nearly wiping out the entire tribe of Benjamin during a time where ordinarily nobody could be convinced to care about right or wrong.
