True story: A while back I was doing a special training about email, and the host blurted out mid-sentence something about why I teach email marketers not to be afraid to shame the hell out of their list if they sell to a market that lends itself to such. Not every market does. Nor does every offer lend itself to using Shaming. But he could tell (and he’s right) I am a big fan of shaming. Shaming has worked for thousands of years. It didn’t magically stop working because some fragile sob sister millennials & broccoli head zoomers who live in their moms’ basements, totally coddled from the world, declare it doesn’t work to have their feelings spared. So yes, I believe in shaming in emails. But I don't believe in shaming people in a cruel way. I do my shaming in a few different, shall I say, “dignified” ways. Not nice ways by any means. Certainly not the kind of ways that will ever get me a bunch of empty social media likes or shares or high-fives. If anything it’s been the exact opposite. But, they’ve also been the kind of ways of shaming people are more likely to buy from in my experience. I also believe these 3 ways can work for most businesses if & when applicable. It’s hard to say for sure though. I see so few email marketers ever doing them. So I can only go my own experiences. Like, for example, when I used them in weight loss — where you never see anyone even coming close to using Shaming — where I used it to help us convert over 40% of a list into buyers according to the late Jim Yaghi who had all the traffic & conversion data. Another true story about that in particular: Many years ago I was on a call hosted by David Garfinkel & Brian McLeod where they interviewed the great, and esteemed master of negotiation - Jim Camp - about a year before he joined the choir invisible. David and Brian invited me on as a guest because they knew I was a huge fan of Jim and I was (still am) extremely grateful to them for the opportunity. And during that call I asked Jim about one of that weight loss biz’s highest selling emails. I wanted to know what he thought of it since it wasn't "nice." So I explained to him what I did in an email. His reply: “Ben, this is Jim. You're solving a real problem and you're creating vision for that person of a solution to a problem they see clearly coming because you've helped them discover it in the story, so all you've done is provide a solution to her real ... That's a real problem for her.” When Jim Camp says you done good, you don't fight it. You just do more of what he just said you did to get good at it... Fun fact: I let a mastermind client (when I co-hosted our Oceans 4 Masterminds with Ryan Levesque, Jack Born, and Andre Chaperon) named Shaun Hadsall in the fitness and weight loss niche use just one of those emails (the one I asked Jim Camp about, incidentally) using one of my shaming secrets. Here’s what Shaun said at the time: “[The email you gave us] put us in 1st place on this launch and doubled our sales on day 2. unheard of in our industry. All the big guys are blown away that we’re only sending 1x per day...hitting unopens in the afternoon and crushing them on salezzz.... They're all sending 2-3x per day and they still can't keep up!” Even I did not get those kind of results from it. That was not a “shaming” email, but it certainly wasn't nice either. But I do explain what made it work (I do not show the whole email though — it is NOT a swipe file, let the goo-roo fanboy take note — it’s a course showing you a specific approach, you have to do your own thinking, writing, selling) so well in: “Email Bastard!” Specifically, in one of the bonuses about how to sell health offers.
