New alcohol price rises to 'heap misery' on NI drinkers

The 10.1% hike is the biggest single alcohol duty increase in almost 50 years. Revenue is holding up for the Galgorm Collection of hotels and restaurants, [managing director Colin Johnston tells Margaret Canning]( with plans to add new outdoor accommodation at the Galgorm Resort & Spa, and to go ahead with a proposed boutique guest house on the Ormeau Road in Belfast. NI’s biggest businesses have seen sales rising by almost 17%, reveals Ulster Business in its [Top 100 Northern Ireland Companies 2023](. Pre-tax profits grew by 11.4% from £1.43bn to £1.59bn. NI’s three major airports are calling on the UK Government and European Commission to [reinstate duty free for flights from Northern Ireland to the EU](. Post-Brexit, NI has been left in limbo as the only region of the UK and EU without duty free, leading to estimated losses of £5m a year for the airports.
