A few weeks ago, at the podcasting conference I wrote about in my last letter, I got asked many times how I was feeling after shutting down the show. If you had asked me 6 weeks prior, I might have been a bit of a Debbie Downer about it. But remove me from it for even just a few weeks, and I have made a complete turn-around. Why? Because this summer has been wild. I knew when I entered 2023 with the word-of-the-year of FOCUS that shutting down the show to focus on [Almanac](~/AAGitQA~/RgRm8qnLP0RWaHR0cHM6Ly9hbG1hbmFjc3VwcGx5Y28uY29tP3V0bV9zb3VyY2U9cG9kaWEmdXRtX21lZGl1bT1icm9hZGNhc3QmdXRtX2NhbXBhaWduPTE2MzAxODVXA3NwY0IKZPrNJBBlSaxI81IbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODZAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAOpO) was absolutely the path that I was heading down. This didn't keep it from being an incredibly bittersweet ending. I quickly found myself flooded with creative ideas for the shop. Our great little team began morphing into its next phases: a long-time member graduated college and got her dream job; another found out she was moving across the country; we made some hires... that didn't pan out. So as I entered a season I believed would be all about high level planning and finally having the breathing room to just do my work without doing it times 2, I found myself doing the work times 4 with my head all the way in the sand. For better and for worse, I have been in the store more in the past 2 months than I have in the previous 2 years. From picking up shifts to training new team members, I have been very much in it. And I can't imagine being able to do all that while continuing to juggle Being Boss too. So as I've been asked how I feel about ending a show that has done so much to define my career... yes, it's still bittersweet. But mostly, it didn't happen a moment too soon. And I'm so glad I didn't hold on until it was too late. Is there anything you're still holding on to that perhaps you should let go of?
