Last month I presented at Podcast Movement, a conference for podcasters that I’ve attended regularly for the past few years. I know in [one of the last episodes](~/AAGitQA~/RgRm4DTeP0RvaHR0cHM6Ly9iZWluZ2Jvc3MuY2x1Yi9wb2RjYXN0L3F1aXR0aW5nLXdpdGgtcHVycG9zZT91dG1fc291cmNlPXBvZGlhJnV0bV9tZWRpdW09YnJvYWRjYXN0JnV0bV9jYW1wYWlnbj0xNjE0MzUyVwNzcGNCCmT64a_9ZEFxK0pSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjg2QGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAADqTg~~) of the Being Boss podcast I mentioned wanting to leave the podcasting industry. And that remains true in that I don’t ever want to build a show that relies on the podcast industry game. However… I don’t plan on leaving podcasting or its community. In fact, Community is what I spoke about at the conference. I partnered up with an old-school Being Boss listener, Isaac of [Kick-Ass Conferences](~/AAGitQA~/RgRm4DTeP0RWaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cua2lja2Fzc2NvbmYuY29tP3V0bV9zb3VyY2U9cG9kaWEmdXRtX21lZGl1bT1icm9hZGNhc3QmdXRtX2NhbXBhaWduPTE2MTQzNTJXA3NwY0IKZPrhr_1kQXErSlIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luODZAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAOpO), to do a talk on what Community actually is. The podcasting industry uses “audience” and “community” synonymously in a way that had us both wanting to do a session making this right for whoever cared to listen. In our sessions, we helped folks differentiate audience from community (a la [this episode from the archives](~/AAGitQA~/RgRm4DTeP0R5aHR0cHM6Ly9iZWluZ2Jvc3MuY2x1Yi9wb2RjYXN0L2NvbW11bml0eS12cy1hdWRpZW5jZS12cy1tYXJrZXQ_dXRtX3NvdXJjZT1wb2RpYSZ1dG1fbWVkaXVtPWJyb2FkY2FzdCZ1dG1fY2FtcGFpZ249MTYxNDM1MlcDc3BjQgpk-uGv_WRBcStKUht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW44NkBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAA6k4~)) and discussed the true power and importance of Community. It was a fun session with a new collaborator that served as a helpful reminder that even though the Being Boss show is over, our message still has a long way it could go. And it's not just the message that's not done, it's the actually Community, too. Another thing I discussed in [one of those last episodes](~/AAGitQA~/RgRm4DTeP0RvaHR0cHM6Ly9iZWluZ2Jvc3MuY2x1Yi9wb2RjYXN0L3F1aXR0aW5nLXdpdGgtcHVycG9zZT91dG1fc291cmNlPXBvZGlhJnV0bV9tZWRpdW09YnJvYWRjYXN0JnV0bV9jYW1wYWlnbj0xNjE0MzUyVwNzcGNCCmT64a_9ZEFxK0pSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjg2QGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAADqTg~~) is that what I've loved most about cultivating community with all y'all is that I can visit any city in this country and easily have an inspiring meal with a few of you. In fact, the night before our session, I did just that. A few days before the conference, I reached out to a few bosses I knew were nearby… some bosses I know quite well and others I’d never had the pleasure of meeting in-person before, and asked them if they wanted to join me for dinner. By the time we arrived, our reservation for 4 had doubled as I scooped up more bosses along the way: folks I’d never met IRL before and an old boss friend who I didn't know would be at the conference until I was pleasantly surprised by a question-asker in a session I was sitting in. So in a posh little restaurant in downtown Denver, we gathered to laugh and eat and have a good time. We talked life and business as seamlessly as you can. And as always, we did it all so joyously loud that we wondered if we were going to get kicked out. It was Community, in all the most real and meta ways it can be. It was a lovely good time, and I can't wait for it to happen again. As the podcast has ended I’ve realized I have every desire (and compulsion) to continue talking to an audience about what it’s like to run and grow a business. Even before podcasting for 8.5 years, I wrote emails to creatives and business owners just like you. Just like this. And I've got the itch to get back at it...
