I can’t tell you how astonishing it is to be saying these words, and to be sharing this moment with you tonight. I am a former school teacher from Brattleboro, Vermont. I am the grandchild of a Holocaust victim, the child of working-class parents, the mother of two amazing children Abe and Sarah, and a wife to my wonderful partner, Elizabeth. Growing up gay, I never dreamed that I would see myself represented in one of the highest offices in the nation, let alone BE a Member of Congress. Together, you have made the improbable, probable. You have given me hope beyond measure – affirming my core belief that change IS possible. Don’t get me wrong – we knew this wasn’t going to be easy. When you aspire to serve your community, people will doubt you. They will tell you that you can’t do it or that you don’t represent them. To people who think we cannot have kind, courageous politics, I say this: When we turn towards each other, we can do anything. We can change our country. Tonight, we sent the message that voters are demanding a bold, progressive future for the state of Vermont. And in Congress, I’m prepared to lead the fight to protect our planet, preserve our democracy, and defend our most fundamental freedoms – because Vermonters deserve nothing less.
