They had an unspoken rule to look, dress and act a certain way. Some of those "rules" I understood, and some I thought were just silly. Specifically, you needed to shave your face to look professional. It didn't make sense to me. If I do nothing, I'll have a beard. It's natural to who I am as a person. Why was it that being myself was not permitted in this organization? It was stupid. It wasn't only the banks that did this; Disney, UPS, and many major companies had a no-beard policy. I also remember my guidance counselor at college telling me to shave before a job interview. Society was wrong, and I'm not one to just follow along with arbitrary rules. So I quit working at the bank, grew out my beard, and started meeting other like-minded people. I gained confidence on the journey and started to share tips and guidance with other guys who were struggling with similar issues that I faced. Their partner didn't want them to have a beard. Their parents didn't want them to have a beard. Their co-workers made jokes about them growing a beard. Beardbrand was founded to help support men on their journey. Obviously, for many of our customers, it's growing a beard. But more than that, it's loving the man looking at you in the mirror. You'll notice that my beard has come and gone. I've tried mustaches, short beards, long beards, and all different hairstyles. For me, that's fun. For some guys, fun is mastering a look and owning that style for a long period of time. There is no right or wrong way to rock your style. But pretending to be someone who you are not is not the right way to live life. It's important in life to develop confidence and skills that allow you to defy authority when needed. Sometimes that authority is a weird invisible feeling, not made by anyone explicitly. Sometimes, it's straight-up bad rules that you need to ignore. People blindly following orders have led to some of mankind's greatest horrors of history. There is a skill to defiance, and it's one that I don't think I've totally mastered. It's a tightrope you must walk as there can be real consequences for breaking the wrong rules or pissing off the wrong people. The reality is that the world was built by the rule-breakers; not the rule-followers. If you want to do remarkable things, you must be willing to do things differently. It's certainly not a life for everyone, but for those who have that defiance feeling in their core, I want to tell you the world needs people who are like you. Don't be afraid to be that person and keep on growing! Eric Founder, [Beardbrand]( [Facebook]( [Twitter]( [Instagram]( [Custom]( Change your [email preferences]( or [unsubscribe here]( hard feelings!
