This month we’re doing something a little different. We’re big board game fans, so we’ve picked out five of the coolest ones we’ve been playing recently. WINGSPAN [Wingspan]( has consistently been one of the most popular games in the past year. It's routinely sold out, but we recently got our hands on it. The premise is that you and your opponents (1–5 players) are bird enthusiasts — bird watchers, ornithologists, conservationists, etc. — attempting to identify and add birds to your board through a series of actions. The gameplay is relatively straightforward once you have it under your belt, but still unique enough to keep interesting. BETRAYAL AT HOUSE ON THE HILL For a larger group, [Betrayal At House On the Hill]( is one of the most fun games we’ve played. At a minimum, 3 players are required, but this game shines when you play with 4–6. The game starts with everyone cooperating, exploring a mansion that unfolds as you move throughout the house. Eventually, something will happen in the game (it’s different almost every time) that will cause one player to betray the others. At that point, the game becomes a free-for-all melee to survive. GREAT WESTERN TRAIL There are complex games, and then there is [Great Western Trail]( — an epic deck-building game that pits you against your opponents to try and become the most successful rancher in the west. Throughout the game, you purchase cattle, hire employees, build buildings and railroads, and deal with hazards. It’s a long game — averaging two and a half hours to finish — but it never feels boring. And there are so many ways to accumulate points that you never really know if you’re winning or losing until the end. [Fox in the Forsest]( FOX IN THE FOREST [Fox In The Forest]( is a straightforward card game that offers enough twists and turns to keep you second-guessing every move you make. It feels like a two-player variation of Spades. You and your opponent are each dealt 13 cards, some of which allow you to perform specific actions to throw off your opponent. It’s easy to learn, fun to play, and only takes 20–30 minutes. [Doomlings]( DOOMLINGS [Doomlings]( is another quick card game that can be played with 2 to 6 players (we found it best with 4). The game occurs on a distant planet where life has just begun to emerge. You and your opponents get and play cards — each representing some genetic trait. Your goal is to score the most points while navigating catastrophes and, ultimately, the end of the world.   KEEP ON GROWING KEEP ON GROWING [Facebook]( [Twitter]( [Instagram]( [Custom]( Change your [email preferences]( or [unsubscribe here]( hard feelings!
