It’s certainly had its ups and downs, but one piece of advice always stuck with me—marry someone who has low expectations. Now, this idea seems counter-intuitive to everything you’ve been told about finding a partner. You want someone driven, hard-working, amazing, funny, friendly. You want the best. I think there’s a difference between standards and expectations. You want someone who has high standards—who only wants to be around amazing people. But once they’re around those great people, they accept them for who they are or who they aren’t. I’m lucky that my wife has low expectations. Never has she demanded or requested that I become something that I’m not. Never has she told me to work harder, be smarter, or do a better job. She loves me for who I am. I would like to think that I return the favor. I think that this mindset is important throughout all of my relationships, and not just marriage. When customers come to the Beardbrand Barbershop, I love to show them around the office or just shoot the shit. Sometimes that means my days are less productive than they should be, but I enjoy the interactions with our customers. I’ve been fortunate to build some unique relationships as the founder of Beardbrand. One of those is with musician Chris Daughtry. We connected back on Instagram in 2015. He was growing his beard out for the first time, and I was giving style advice (side note: we still give free style advice if you text “STYLE” to [512-879-3297](tel:5128793297)). Chris and I stayed in touch over the years, but earlier this year, he messaged me telling me how much he loved Black Sails. I got him on the phone and suggested that we do a collaboration, and that’s the start of Black Crown. Working with Chris has been amazing. He is someone who has high standards and carries himself with much humility and kindness. He is someone who represents the Beardbrand core values of Freedom, Hunger, and Trust. Black Crown isn’t like any Beardbrand fragrance we’ve ever made. It’s energizing, fresh, and bright; but not overpowering or brash. I believe it’s a fragrance that represents Chris and who he is as a person and performer. I’m very proud of how we’ve come together to make something amazing, and you’re going to love it.
