[A book, vintage typewriter, and journal on a wood table. ] From Brené October 31, 2023 Hi everyone, A note to say hello and give you a quick update. 1. Austin is known as the Live Music Capital of the World. We love our musicians! The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) is a nonprofit that provides access to affordable healthcare for greater Austin’s low-income, working musicians, with a focus on prevention and wellness. [A collage of images of Carrie Rodriguez and Gina Chavez performing live and an image of Carrie, Gina, and Brené together at Austin City Limits in 2021.] On Sunday, November 12, at the Long Center in Austin, I’m joining my friends, Austin musicians Gina Chavez and Carrie Rodriguez, for an evening of song and storytelling. I’m going to talk about love and hope, and we get the great privilege of hearing Gina and Carrie perform. It's going to be a special evening to support HAAM and the musicians it serves. If you’re looking for a fun weekend with amazing music and an event that will definitely #keepaustinweird — join us. [Tickets are here]( [A linked image with information about the HAAM event, A Night of Song and Storytelling. ]( 2. I miss podcasting. I can neither confirm nor deny that there may be one in our very near future. Stay tuned. [Brené in the podcast studio.] 3. I loved and needed my social media sabbatical, but I missed connecting with y’all. Along with launching incredible new weekly content on our website in January, I’m planning a very intentional return to social in 2024. I’ve spent the year studying how algorithms and bots are built to flame hostility and vitriol and how the platforms reward knee-jerk criticism rather than curiosity. This is particularly dangerous right now. Our team believes that strong communities encourage debate and discourse and even disagreement, but that they also protect community members from hatefulness, dehumanization, and reckless criticism. We’re going to try something new with moderation controls and a new community-building function on our website. It’s a big undertaking, but staying connected with y’all in a meaningful way is worth the FFT. [Team members with their hands together and bracelets that say “ABK”] That’s it for now! There’s a lot of lovelessness in the world right now. Peace be with you. And peace to everyone who is in fear, struggle, and heartbreak right now. BB Follow Brené on social!
