[AWAI]( WEEK IN REVIEW December 25 – 29, 2023 --------------------------------------------------------------- Happy New Year! Happy 2024, {NAME}, A Motivational Minute from Jen Adams Embrace Your "Plot Twists" and Plan for Your Future Flexes Jen Adams, Director of [The Professional Writers' Alliance](, recently shared an idea with PWA members and I wanted to be sure you saw it. You can use it to start your New Year with a fresh perspective. Here's what Jen wrote … I give you permission to laugh at me for this … but each night before bed, I sit down at my desk with an intentionally small scrap of paper and write down the two or three things I really need to do the next day. It's not really a "to-do" list … more of a "must-do" list, with the most essential tasks I need to accomplish to keep my projects on track and my business moving forward. I know if I can at least do those few things, I'll be fine. I think — and continue to hope — that I will be able to wake up and work my plan without interruption each day. Yet all too often, the Universe goes, "Nope!" So, I've got a choice. I can get frustrated, stressed, and cry about it all. Or, I can embrace my "plot twist" and create a new story for the day. It's my choice every day. You, too, can embrace your "plot twists" and train yourself to get better at dealing with change, building up your "flex power" day by day until you are a strong, resilient superstar. That's because adaptability and resilience aren't innate traits. They're skills, which means you can learn them and practice them until you are flexing with the best. Here's how … - Pull out a piece of paper. - Write down this formula: When X happens, I'm going to Y. - Take a few of the things you feel are obstacles or challenges in your writing life, and plug them into the formula. Reflecting on my own life, I'd write something like, "When a family health situation interrupts my workday, I'm going to go back to writing after dinner between 9 and 11 p.m." Or, I might write, "When I feel anxious about finishing my latest AWAI course, I'm going to set a timer for 10 minutes and do a little bit of it right then." The goal isn't to completely solve or eliminate every situation or emotion you have. The goal is to work on your flex muscle by creating a plan for the situations you know (or expect) you are going to face. That way, when something comes up, you can stay calm, keep moving forward, and make progress. Try this as you kick off your New Year, and embrace your "plot twists" as they happen! One note … I didn't come up with this formula. It's based on concepts from Brendon Burchard, a noted motivational speaker, course creator, and author.
