[Claim Your $1 Access Here]( Why I Love this Money-Making Skill — And Why You Might, Too
By Rebekah Mays What if I told you there was a way to use your copywriting skills to make more money in less time … … all while writing as much or as little as you want to? There is a way — and that's to build a skill in marketing strategy. Personally, I love this skill. Marketing strategy pays me more money … My clients value it more … And often, it feels easier and more fun than writing itself! In fact, the opportunities that come with strategy are HUGE. And it's not as hard to get started as you might think. What Is Marketing Strategy? You might be wondering what a marketing strategist does, exactly. In a nutshell, marketing strategists help decide HOW to market products and services, instead of writing those marketing materials. For instance, when working on a marketing campaign, a strategist will help determine: - the right message
- the right time
- the right format
- and the right platform … … in order to reach the target audience and sell the products or services. Once the strategy is in place, a copywriter will then write all the pieces of copy to execute the strategy. You may choose to be that copywriter, or you may have someone else handle the nitty-gritty writing work. So what are the benefits of strategy work? And why should you consider offering this as a service? Benefit #1: You Can Command Higher Fees for Less Work One of the biggest perks of marketing strategy is that it pays better for the time it takes. Since you're helping clients figure out how to make money, clients often see this kind of work as more valuable than copywriting alone. As a result, they're willing to pay higher rates. So how much can you earn? There's not really an upper limit — it all depends on how much the client values your ideas and advice. To give you a few real-life examples, here are the fees I've been paid recently: Project 1: $3,000 per month for a marketing strategy project One of my old copywriting clients needed guidance on the next steps in their marketing. I proposed a three-month marketing strategy project for a total of $9,000, and they said yes! I knew the client well already, so the project was much easier than if I'd started with a brand-new client. The project took me about seven hours per week. Project 2: $2,000-$5,000 for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy projects Last year, I started offering a stand-alone SEO strategy project. I provided clients with an analysis of their website's SEO and mapped out the content they needed to work on. I completed several of these projects, and they took me anywhere from 10 to 40 hours total. Project 3: $2,500 for a set of 10 blog outlines This year, I charged a fee for a bundle of detailed content outlines. SEO-optimized blog outlines provide tons of value to clients who have in-house writers but don't know as much about marketing, and they are much faster for me to create than fully written pieces of content. Project 4: $1,500 for a three-page copy review One of my first-ever strategy projects was a copy review of a few core pages of my client's website. I provided feedback on what I thought was working and some suggestions for improvement. The project was quick … and helped my client strengthen their copy. With all these projects, I earned around $100 or more per hour — for me, that means every single one has been profitable. The exciting thing is that with more experience, results, and confidence, you can charge even more than I do. Benefit #2: Add More Value in the World of AI Another benefit of offering strategy services is that it helps you add more value in an AI-powered world. These days, with a few clicks of a button, a client can create generic copy quite easily … What's much harder to create is copy that actually speaks to customers and builds your client's business. As a marketing strategist, you'll help your client know what kind of copy to create and when. Clients will always need guidance on these high-level questions … meaning your career will thrive, no matter what happens with AI. Benefit #3: The Work Is Fun! Even though I started copywriting because I wanted to write, I discovered I enjoy strategy MORE than writing. For me, writing takes a lot of discipline and focus. Meanwhile, I'm often excited to work on my strategy projects. They typically involve: - Understanding the customers' pain points and desires
- Collecting and measuring how content performs
- Planning future content and copy projects
- Helping the client brainstorm ideas I really love this stuff! (You might too!) Plus, the more you learn about strategy and the better you get, the more fun you can have with your work. Benefit #4: You Can Make a Huge Impact on a Client's Business Strategy becomes even more rewarding when the work makes a big difference for your clients. Maybe you bring an idea or suggestion that seems obvious to you … But for the client, it's a huge a-ha moment. When your ideas are based on sound marketing principles, they will make a huge impact on a client's revenue. Benefit #5: It's the Perfect Way to Upsell Your Writing Services While you CAN build a business offering only marketing strategy if you want to … the good news is that you don't have to give up writing! In fact, offering a marketing strategy to a client is the perfect way to "upsell" your writing services. For instance, maybe you charge a client $2,000 to map out an email marketing plan. You could then charge a project-based or monthly retainer fee to write all those emails. In my own business, I've found that a mix of strategy and writing is ideal. They complement each other perfectly — and give me plenty of variety to keep me engaged in my work. How to Get Started as a Marketing Strategist Are you intrigued about marketing strategy as a good path for you? Here's how to get started. Step 1: Gain the Fundamental Skills Most successful strategists have "on-the-ground" experience in writing and marketing before they start getting paid a consulting fee. This means that if you're just starting out, keep prioritizing those foundational copywriting courses like [The AWAI Method™](, and working on landing your first client. And in the long term, keep your eye out for trainings that include strategy as part of their learning objectives! Step 2: Practice Thinking Like a Strategist But don't worry — while you're building your skills, you don't have to wait to become a strategist. You can start thinking like one today. Ask your prospects and clients deeper questions … and bring them ideas and recommendations. This will only increase the chances you'll get hired on a copywriting project — so you can build experience more quickly. Step 3: Offer Strategy to Existing Copywriting Clients If you've gotten some initial copywriting experience and have a few paying projects under your belt, you might start offering strategy as a paid service to your clients. This is a low-risk way to get started, because your clients already trust you … and you already understand their business and customers. You'll have a huge advantage, and your work will be more effective. Step 4: Approach Small and Local Businesses Another way to get started is to offer marketing strategy services to small and local businesses. Think of your local florist … your dentist … or a family member's business. Quite often, these smaller businesses don't have marketing departments or sophisticated strategies in place — and they desperately need your marketing knowledge! A Skill in Strategy Will Help You Earn More in Less Time Whether you call yourself a strategist or a copywriter … You can earn far more money and make a bigger impact when you put on your strategist hat. And with AI shaking up the world of copywriting, now's a great time to build this skill. Who knows? You might just fall in love with it, like I did.
