According to science (not me) ;) [The Writer’ s Life]( December 13, 2023 "Money can't buy you happiness, but it helps you look for it in a lot more places." – Milton Berle Hi {NAME}, If you're struggling to choose your niche as a writer, rejoice. Today I'm going to tell you about a writing niche that can truly make you happy (according to science … not me!). So, if you're looking for a great niche … Or you'd like a change of pace and want to be a part of a massive (and growing) market that's bigger than practically every other "writer's niche" out there … Pay special attention. This has the power to change everything … for the better. The Best Writer's Niche Out There? I won't keep you in suspense … The niche I'm talking about is writing for the nonprofit and cause marketing space. Now before we go any further, I just have to reiterate that YES, there is money to be made writing for nonprofits. You can read all the great statistics and more that show why this is, [in a briefing Katie put together here](. The bottom line is this: The nonprofit space is absolutely MASSIVE. Bigger than any traditional direct-response niche, like financial or even health. Which means plenty of opportunity and hardly any competition. Mainly because most writers mistakenly believe there's no money in writing for nonprofits. But more important than the money, is the fact it's the only niche that — according to science — can actually make you HAPPY. The Science of Giving Science has long been fascinated with what makes us happy. A consistent finding across the board is there's a CLEAR link between happiness and altruism. Several studies have demonstrated that giving or serving others can lead to feelings of happiness and well-being. A 2008 study led by Harvard Business School professor Michael Norton and colleagues found that giving money to others made people happier. The reason? Giving to a charity or cause activates regions of the brain associated with pleasure, social connection, and trust. And these positive emotions that get triggered are known as the "helper's high." In addition to making you feel happy … giving can have a positive effect on your health and longevity. A John Hopkins University study found that giving lowered blood pressure and helped to reduce stress. Another study found it increased health benefits in those with chronic illnesses, including HIV and multiple sclerosis. And yet another study found that elderly folks who give regularly have a 44% reduced risk of dying over a five-year period. This is what's possible when you give your writing talent, time, and energy to a cause you believe in. And hey … you can get paid pretty darn well for it too (there are writers making six-figures writing strictly for nonprofits!). It's Not Either/Or … It's "AND" So, if you've struggled on whether you should write for a niche like financial or health because the "money's good" … … but your heart says you should be doing something else, something with a greater and far more lasting impact … Please know this: It's not either/or. You don't have to give up your desire to help others so that you can make money and have a good life. You can have your cake and eat it too … You CAN make great money WHILE helping to make the world a better place (and get that helper's high!). How? [By diving in with both feet into writing for nonprofits.]( How to Break Into This Fulfilling AND Profitable Niche Breaking into the nonprofit writing niche can be a fulfilling journey.
