Tips that help you enjoy, improve, and progress in your writerâs life [The Writer’ s Life](
June 9, 2023 "Success is the sum of small efforts — repeated day in and day out."
– Robert Collier Hi {NAME}, One of the most powerful factors in your success as a writer comes down to what you do — consistently. There is massive power in habits … Because habits, all added together, contribute greatly to what you accomplish. Whether it's your output, how much money you make, or your lifestyle … it's all impacted by daily habits. So today, Mindy McHorse, Executive Editor of Barefoot Writer, is here to share the habits that have influenced her success over the last decade as a freelance writer. She's someone to learn from … Mindy has consistently created 12 issues of our popular Barefoot Writer magazine, every year, for over 10 years now (!!) … on top of her other writing projects AND raising four amazing kiddos. Before I hand it over though, I have another thing for you that can improve your output in a big way … [These writing templates!]( We've taken 12 of the most-requested writing projects (the ones you'll most likely get asked to write) and turned each one into a handy template, along with a helpful how-to guide so you can write with confidence every single time. And today ONLY, you can get the bundle of all 12 of them for over 80% off! By Mindy McHorse [female freelance writer working on laptop at desk] You're definitely not alone if you know the struggle of sitting down to do your writing work … And having no clue where to start. I remember in my early days as a freelancer, I would stare at the blank computer screen, just willing clients to find me. I didn't have a plan, a roadmap, or even a clue, really, where to start. I've since learned that all those things will help get your writing career off the ground — roadmaps, plans, and even goals, for that matter … But the hang up I repeatedly ran into is that no two days are alike and often the roadmaps and goals change weekly. Enter the power of habits. With smart habits built into your writer's life, you can get in the writing groove, get your mind focused, and get things done, regardless of what you need to accomplish each day. So here are six "power habits" for writers that help me stay focused daily so I can keep pressing forward — while enjoying the process, too. Here they are: 1. Make daily connections with other writers. If you have a crew you can go to who build you up when you need it and critique your copy when you ask, then you'll never get stuck. Some of the best places to find like-minded writers will be in the AWAI Facebook groups, including [this AWAI member community](, which is free to join. Or, attend a live event like [AWAI's upcoming Bootcamp](. You can say hi, ask how others are, share a writing tidbit, whatever. Be present and put people first in this career and you'll be floored at what they'll do for you. Make it a habit to check in with colleagues daily and you'll learn more and feel more connected to a bigger network of support. Check out this Monday Morning Jumpstart episode, as Ted Capshaw and Jade Trueblood talk about the [importance of a writing community for the solopreneur](, and identifying what you need from that community to make your writing business more successful. 2. Acknowledge yourself every time you sit down to write. Every time you make an effort to write, something good will come of it. Maybe you'll write an entire blockbuster email for a client. Maybe you'll just get as far as one powerful Subject Line. Regardless of the what or how much, I encourage you to create a habit for the end of each day where you recognize yourself for something gained, something learned, or something written. Because while every day won't be an epic writing day, you will always have at least one or a few wins. And set yourself up for success every morning by establishing a productive routine. Give this a listen for ideas: [Monday Morning Jumpstart: Daily Success Practices for Writers](. 3. Write (or think about writing) every day. The more you write, even if it's just a matter of composing things in your head, the more shots you take. Some of those shots will miss, and some will make it big. If you're not sure what to write, AWAI has dozens of writing prompts [published here](. Writing contests are also great avenues for getting those wheels rolling (psst … Barefoot Writer magazine offers a monthly essay challenge that, if won, [gets you paid and with a byline to boot](!). Creating new content every day strengthens that part of your brain that you need to show up creatively. And the more copy you can put out with greater speed, the more money you'll make. Think you have no time to write? [Watch this Monday Morning Jumpstart …]( 4. Never stop … Successful writers dedicate time and energy to key areas like learning, time management, self-improvement, and self-marketing. These vital areas of your business need consistent attention so your business continues to flourish. With an industry like ours that's evolving at a rapid rate, keeping up with best practices, new marketing tactics, and brand-new specialties is a must. [Make goals, and then stick with them.]( Look for systems and processes that make your job easier (see #6) and be honest with yourself about where you can keep improving your performance. Avoid the feast or famine cycle by continually marketing yourself to new prospects. And keep in touch with your current clients too! While it's easy to put marketing aside when you're very busy (we've all done it!), it's better in the long run to maintain a self-marketing schedule no matter what. Check out this free webinar: [Top 10 Places to Find Freelance Writing Clients](, and these two articles: [How to Market Your Copywriting Business Consistently]( and [The Foundation Is in Place — Now What?]( Keep an eye on your goals with this [check-in process](. 5. Handle with care. Taking care of your body while writing will only make you a better writer. So if you get in the habit of drinking a glass of water every time you sit down to write, or keeping carrots or nuts at your desk, then you'll come out of each writing session feeling a whole lot better than if you grab for chips and a cola. If you need some insights about the importance of creating boundaries in order to take care of yourself, listen to this [Monday Morning Jumpstart: Setting Boundaries](. Of course, while caring for your physical health is essential, it's equally as important to care for your mental health. The best approach I've found is to take "self-care" breaks and do something that makes you feel happy or makes you smile. It needn't be practical — doing the laundry or exercising wouldn't be a fit here. Your goal is to find something frivolous or fun that lightens your mood. It might be smelling flowers in the garden … or dancing in your living room. Or even running to the local store to buy your favorite treat or invigorating smoothie. Anything goes here, as long as it's fun and it's for you. For some inspiration, check out this [Monday Morning Jumpstart: Emotional and Physical Wellness](. 6. Swiping secrets. Take a few minutes each day to read someone else's work, whether it's an email in your inbox or a website from a company you admire. Studying the way successful writers and businesses present their copy goes a long way in showing you what gets read and what doesn't. In fact, if you see the same approach to copy being presented over and over again, that's a pretty good indicator that it's working. And when something works, I encourage you to follow that same approach. It really comes down to not inventing the wheel. If someone's already cracked the code to writing something well, then it's completely okay to follow the same formula or template they've laid out for you. Swiping for inspiration is fine, but of course you can't copy and paste. In fact, swiping will save you loads of time in the long run, while still giving you an opportunity to put your own unique spin or voice on something. If there's a system … a formula … a template … a cheat sheet of notes from a favorite writer or program … Use it! Templates are a particularly useful example of this. They give you a starting point plus a way to skirt writer's block plus a chance to save a hefty amount of time. Even better, templates take the stress and worry out of creating something from nothing. I know for me, sometimes when I start a new project — even if I've written something similar three dozen times — I still have to go back and research what goes where and how to construct the messaging. That is, until I figured out templates could solve all my problems. The [Web Writing Templates program]( is especially helpful here. It includes templates for everything from website homepages and social media posts to PPC ads, landing pages, blog posts, e-letter, case studies, white papers, and video scripts. And that's not even all of them! Think of these templates as successful structures you can use to guide your writing, and they come with all the tools you need to get started, no matter what you're working on. ([Check it out here if you're curious.]() Look, successful writing really comes down to two things: One is being able to put out good content on a regular basis, the other is about looking for the shortcuts so you don't get mired down or desperate. Shortcuts, and templates in particular, help with both. A Shortcut for Building Useful Project Templates For a shortcut to creating your own, you could grab AWAI's bundle of 12 writing templates for the most popular, in-demand projects.
