It’s something every writer should know about … [The Writer’ s Life]( January 25, 2023 "You can have what you want if you help other people get what they want." – Zig Ziglar Hi {NAME}, If you're not familiar with [customer retention](, you need to be. It's one of the hottest "new again" skills for 2023. And with good reason … In good times, companies tend to "forget" to pay attention to this side of the business. Or at the very least, they don't put in as much effort into retaining their existing customers as they should. However, in bad times, it becomes hugely important. Case in point: A Twilio study found 67% of marketers report prioritizing customer retention this year! The main reason it's "all-hands" on deck for this often neglected part of most businesses is simple: It's HUGELY profitable to keep the customers they already have! A study cited in the Harvard Business Review found that even retaining just 5% of a company's customers boosted profits by as much as 95%! That's PROFITS — the money the business owners actually get to take home! Which means a mega-opportunity for you as a writer to help companies implement effective customer retention strategies. This is all about finding ways to develop a deeper, better relationship with existing customers … and keeping them happy! And given the fact that retaining just 5% of customers can boost profits by as much as 95% … … it's easy to see why companies are "gung-ho!" about improving this part of their business. Because of that, it's one of the few skills that offers you THREE ways to get paid. Check this out … Payday #1: Auditing Your Client's Current Retention Efforts Truth be told, as a writer who understands customer retention … you don't even have to write any copy! You can simply offer to audit your client's current retention efforts, and make recommendations for different things they can do to improve them. Simply write up your findings into a templated report that has all the relevant sections your client needs, and voila! You come away with a $2,000–$3,000 payday. Want to earn more? Then simply move onto … Payday #2: Writing the Copy to Implement Your Recommendations The audit is just stage 1. If you're interested, you can then write all the copy needed to implement your recommendations. Often, this takes the form of fun, rewarding "short copy" projects that are simply designed to engage existing customers and keep them onboard. That's another $1,500–$2,500 in your pocket (or more depending on how much you recommend in your audit!). And at most, you've only spent a couple of hours, while delivering insane value to your client. But if you'd like to boost your income even further, there's one more way to help your client out. Payday #3: Create Custom "Operating Procedures" The last piece you can offer is to create a customer operating procedure your client can use moving forward into the future. This boils down to creating a series of simple, easy-to-follow guides and checklists your client can use or give to a team member to implement. This way, they can continue to improve their customer retention efforts year in and year out. That could bank you another $3,000–$5,000. So all in all … One client could be worth $6,500–$10,500 to you. (!!) But WAIT — there's more … 😉 Because one thing we haven't yet touched on is royalties. Yes, this is a "bonus" way you can get paid. Many clients will be happy to pay you royalties because you're directly impacting their bottom line. (Remember, if you can help them retain just 5% of their customers, they could potentially increase their profits by up to 95%). Which means in certain cases, you could negotiate a small 2%–5% royalty on the increase in profits your efforts create. So if your client makes an extra $500,000 because of your recommendations … … that means an extra $10,000–$25,000 for you — on TOP of the original $6,000–$10,500 fee. Which means … One client could be worth $16,000–$35,500 to you in this scenario! Why on earth would a client be thrilled to pay you that much? Think about it: They're trading $16,500–$35,500 to make an extra $500,000 in PROFIT (i.e. money the business gets to keep after paying all its expenses, processing refunds, etc.). It's a no-brainer deal. Any savvy business owner will trade $35,500 all day to make an extra $500,000 in profit. This is why I can't stress it enough — Learn everything you can about customer retention! It's top of mind right now for your prospective clients. And it will be for the foreseeable future. And if you do, you'll give yourself a major edge in the marketplace. Because hardly any writers know or understand the best practices to retain customers. So it's a chance for you to plant your flag in this woefully underserved "niche." And speaking of niching yourself … That's one of the cool things about focusing on customer retention. It automatically turns you into a specialist. You don't have to stress over what "niche" to get into — you've already done it just by choosing to offer customer retention services. And if you think it takes a long time to learn or master … Think again. Customer retention is simple and straightforward. You don't need superior writing talent or to be a marketing genius. Just learn a few "best practices" and how to package them into an effective customer retention strategy and you're off to the races. Right now, we've opened up a [brand-new certification training]( that shows you the ropes and gets you ready to take on clients as a Customer Retention Specialist in just four weeks.
