It all comes down to intention … [The Writer’ s Life]( November 29, 2022 "Our intention creates our reality." – Wayne Dyer Hi {NAME}, When people find AWAI, they usually fall into one of two camps … Those who think of writing as a hobby … and those who know they want writing to be their new career. If you're in the second group … you're in great company! We've been helping writers do just that for over 25 years now. You might say we know a thing or two about building a writing business. 😉 (If you could use some help building your writing business, [you'll want to check this out](.) If you're in the first group, you're in great company too … there's plenty here at AWAI to keep you learning and strengthening your skills. But I have a question for you: When you look forward to this time next year, do you still want this to be a hobby? Or would you like to get paid for it? If your answer is a hobby … keep doing what you're doing … whatever gives you fulfillment and joy. BUT if this is more than a hobby for you … that you want to make great money writing … then you need to start treating the work you're doing as a business. Your writing hobby turns into a writing business when you develop the mindset of a business owner. When you use your knowledge and training as a writer to make money. Because that's the only difference between a hobby and a business … the way the money flows (out or in!). So, how do you become this writer with the mindset of a business owner? First, decide that it's what you want to do. And you also decide if you want clients to pay you to write for them or if you want to make money without clients. Either are valid business models for your writer's life, and you can even choose both. Then, set goals that align with what you want your writer's life to look like. We'll get into this in detail in the coming weeks, but for now … how much money do you want to make next year? When will you realistically start? [>> If you're ready to get started (or need help restarting), go here.]( Next, plan how to achieve those goals. Reverse engineer your big goals down to the smaller manageable, actionable actions. For example, if you want to make $60,000 a year from your writing, that means only $5,000 per month. How many clients do you need to reach those numbers based on the writing services you plan to provide? (It's likely only a few!) Then, commit to taking the action required to make it happen. Literally write out what you need to do, including your writing schedule and deadlines for each of the action steps of your plan. Commit to doing whatever it takes to make it work. And lastly, do the work. No excuses. No giving up when the work is hard, or the path seems long … because it will be at times. Do the work, because you know it will be worth it. Your writer's life is worth it. It all comes down to your intent … If you treat it like a business, it'll pay you like a business. If you treat it like a hobby, it'll cost you like a hobby. Hobby or business, it's your choice. And as I said earlier, both choices are valid. Either way, just be honest with yourself so that you have clear expectations of what you really want from your writer's life. You're in the driver's seat! Now, if you KNOW you to move forward, and could use some help, [I invite you to join us here](. Not only will we ensure you're up and running, but we'll also give you a plan to follow for the next 90 days AND be with you every step of the way to ensure you don't get stuck. Sometimes just having a roadmap and support is all it takes to start gaining traction … So this week I'm going to stay on this money-making business theme, with the hope of setting you up for an excellent 2023.
