Fortunately, you can learn them in under 10 mins [The Writer’ s Life]( August 25, 2022 "Education is not the filling of a pot but the lighting of a fire." – W.B. Yeats It feels like there's so much to learn … Am I right, {NAME}? But here's the thing … All you really need to learn to start making money as a writer are the basics of persuasive writing (copywriting) and how to write a project or two. The rest can be learned while you're making money. That's what's so great about copywriting — unlike most professions, you don't have to master it all before you start getting paid. In fact, Katie and I are confident we can teach you everything you need to know in 10 weeks to take on clients and write the projects they need. ([More on that here!]() But for today, our Senior Copy Chief, Sandy Franks, says there are six things you "need to know" right now … And fortunately, you can learn them in under 10 minutes! (Five if you're a fast reader.) 🙂 What You Need to Know #1: E-commerce is growing. It's no secret that e-commerce has changed the way people shop. Nowadays, you can purchase a car without even walking into a showroom. Insider Intelligence forecasts that e-commerce sales in the U.S. alone will grow 16.1%, reaching over $1 trillion by the end of this year for the first time in history. And globally, e-commerce sales are expected to reach $5.5 trillion by the end of 2022. (!!) More people buying online means an almost never-ending supply of copywriting opportunities are waiting for you, which leads to the next thing you need to know … What You Need to Know #2: Copywriting comes in all forms. When AWAI first opened its doors 25 years ago, copywriters had four ways to get paid: direct mail, catalogs, space ads, and radio spots. Today there are over 80 different well-paid writing projects, all used by companies to meet people exactly where they are on the [customer journey](. Whether it's informative content writing like blogs, newsletters and case studies that attract prospects … or emails, sales letters, and sell sheets that encourage a purchase … or helpful videos and articles that ensures a positive "post-purchase" experience … there's a place for EVERY writer in our industry. What You Need to Know #3: Clients need and want ideas — and lots of them. The foundation of any effective piece of copy or content is an emotionally compelling idea. And with all those pieces needed, being an idea machine means more opportunities for you to get paid. Simply by presenting ideas to your client, you're demonstrating great value … They'll see you not just as a copywriter who has their needs, wants, and desires in mind … but as a writer who wants them to succeed and be a part of that success. What You Need to Know #4: It's a big world out there — clients are everywhere. Your next client could be a small business located a few streets down from where you live. Or it could be the mid-sized business on Main Street in the heart of downtown. Or it might be that large firm with headquarters in New York or San Francisco. Or you could find yourself working for an international company that does business here in the U.S. and in several places abroad. Gone are the days of needing face-to-face connections. The internet gives you access to clients 24/7, no matter where in the world you choose to be. What You Need to Know #5: How to be a client magnet. In the 1989 hit movie Field of Dreams, the main character (played by Kevin Costner) is driven to build a baseball diamond in the middle of a cornfield. In a dream, voices tell him, "If you build it, they will come." However, that's simply not the case in business. Clients need to know who you are and what you can do for them! Fortunately, LinkedIn makes this much easier these days … Make sure you have a professional profile, and if you have a writing niche, make sure it's front and center. Connect with potential clients you want to work with. Comment on their social media feeds. Publish content yourself that's relevant and useful to them. You'll be amazed how one baby action a day can result in more and more connections. What You Need to Know #6: You're one client away from success. This goes for newbie and experienced writers alike … as our measurement of "success" keeps growing the longer we do this … But if you're newer, this is an important lesson to learn right now.
