– Katherine Whitehorn Ever have a great experience come out of a bad one, {NAME}? My first job out of college was terrible … I worked for a staffing agency, and from the very first day on the job had to cold-call people for a week straight and set up appointments. Followed by in-person meetings the second week. 😳 If you're a seasoned salesperson, or you love talking to new people, you may be great at cold-calling and in-person sales. Companies need people like you, and you're amazing! But for me? It was T-O-R-T-U-R-E!! I'm an introvert by nature. My comfort zone is right behind my laptop. I remember thinking, why can't I just write these people and ask them to call ME? (Foreshadowing, perhaps? 😉) Apparently, I wasn't the only one thinking having materials to use would save me loads of time closing leads … Fast forward to today, and you'll find companies everywhere scrambling to find writers who can help their sales team. This hot new specialty is called [Sales Enablement Copywriting]( … And — no joke — it may be one of the most exciting opportunities I've ever learned about during my 18 years in this industry! The projects are short and pay VERY well … the clients literally give you everything you need to write the materials … and companies are searching high and low for writers who understand what they need … making it very easy to land clients fast, even if you're brand new. So today I've asked one of the world's foremost experts, Steve Slaunwhite, to take you inside the opportunity and show you why getting into this niche right now could set you up for a very lucrative, life-long writing career. Take it away, Steve! [Rebecca Matter’ s signature] Rebecca P.S. My first job story had a crazy plot twist … Years later while at our annual copywriting Bootcamp, an attendee walked up to me and said, "you probably don't remember me, but I knew when I met you, you'd do something great." It was Jane — the person who hired me for that sales job!! She had become an AWAI member to leverage her sales experience into copywriting. [AWAI's Rebecca Matter at AWAI's Bootcamp with her boss from her first job] I love this small world so very much! Is Sales Enablement Copywriting "Ideal" for New Copywriters?
By B2B Expert, Steve Slaunwhite I remember vividly when I began to market myself as a copywriter. It was the 1990s, and I had zero experience and not much of a portfolio. Back then, there wasn't an "AWAI" to guide me. So, it was tough — damn tough — to get started. The main problem was, I was trying to break into "mature" markets already dominated by seasoned copywriters. For example, I tried brand advertising. But that niche was owned by creative teams at fancy ad agencies. Without a portfolio, it was difficult to get a creative director to even talk to me. I also tried B2C direct mail. However, there were already numerous big-shot freelance copywriters in that space. Who's going to hire me; a new copywriter who, at that time, had yet to write a direct mailer? It was frustrating. But then I discovered (more like, stumbled upon) software. Although that industry had been around for decades, it was beginning to experience exponential growth. The number of software companies was doubling almost every year. They all needed marketing materials written. I didn't know much about software, but I wondered, "Hmm. Could I?" An Express Elevator to The Top At the time, the software industry had three characteristics that made it a ground-floor opportunity for new copywriters: - Rapid growth.
- A high demand for copywriters.
- Few copywriters in that space. I knew that if I jumped into that niche, I would have a chance of quickly becoming a go-to copywriter for those companies. So I jumped in. With both feet! A few weeks later, I got my first client, Alias Wavefront (now part of Autodesk.) Soon after, I landed two more clients. I was off to the races! "Ground-Floor" Opportunities Only Come Up Every Few Years Over the years, I've watched as "ground-floor opportunities" emerge where new copywriters have jumped in early — as I did with software — and quickly built thriving freelance businesses. Search engine optimization, social media, email funnels, and content marketing are standout examples. If you had gotten into one of those specialties early in the game, you'd likely be doing very, very well now! So, what's the next one? And how do you get in now? The next one is already here. It's called sales enablement copywriting, and it meets all the criteria of a booming opportunity for new copywriters: - The niche is growing rapidly — by more than 50% each year!
- Companies are struggling to find good writers who can write this stuff because the field is so new.
- Competition is virtually nonexistent. Very few copywriters focus on this niche or are even aware of it. If you're a new copywriter looking for an express elevator to the top, this might be it. What Is "Sales Enablement" Copywriting? In a nutshell, sales enablement copywriting involves writing content that helps a company's sales team sell more. In the "old days," salespeople typically worked the phones or pounded the pavement to make sales. Today, it's mostly digital. For example, salespeople use email and LinkedIn extensively to reach out to new prospects. In addition, approximately 80% of company salespeople are new. Most have less than three years of experience. Which is why companies need to equip them with strategically-written scripts, templates, and other content to help them sell effectively. In fact, according to research by Learn.G2, 84% of sales executives cite content as a way to boost sales. And sales enablement is a form of content. So, what do copywriters in this exciting new niche write? Here are just a few of the projects you could take on: - Case studies. (Customer success stories.)
- Product description blurbs.
- Feature and benefit blurbs.
- Content for presentation slides. (AKA sales decks.)
- Prospecting email templates.
- Sales follow-up templates.
- Cold call scripts.
- Sell sheet brochures.
- Competitor battlecards. Companies are currently struggling to keep up with the demand for content their sales teams desperately need. It's a priority for them — and a huge, open opportunity for you! One of my clients, a sales VP, told me recently, "Right now, content is more important to us than any other investment we make in our sales team, including training!" So companies are eager to hear from a copywriter who knows how to write the sales enablement content they need. A copywriter like you, perhaps? How To Jump in And Get Started I'll be honest with you. Sales enablement copywriting is not for everyone. You need to enjoy writing sales-oriented materials. You need to be able to look at a product or service — an office printer, for example — and write words that a salesperson can use to describe and sell it. You also need to understand B2B sales — or at least the basics. But if you think writing this type of content might be a good fit for you, I recommend you jump in right away. Learn how to write the various projects involved. Then get out there and talk to companies about their sales enablement content needs. Those who get into a niche like this early tend to do well. Very well. [Editor's Note: Interested in learning more? [Go here right now]( to see the kinds of projects you'll be writing, how much you'll get paid, and how to quickly break in.] TODAY:
