Dip your toes and build your portfolio [The Writer’ s Life]( July 1, 2022 "Sometimes the best hiding place is the one that's in plain sight." – Stephenie Meyer Hi {NAME}, Your first (or next) paid writing gig might be hiding in a place that's SO obvious … That you've never even considered it. 😁 AWAI member Krista Looney found one such gig — and it's pretty sweet. She landed it without quitting her job or spending extra hours writing in her off-time … She gets paid to strengthen her skills and confidence and build a killer portfolio without risking anything … AND it's led to her getting approached by a new client who wants the same kind of writing. I'll let Krista fill you in … Hey there! I think a lot of wannabe-writers who stumble upon AWAI (like me!) are intrigued by the writer's life but afraid to take "the leap." They're afraid to stray away from a good-paying full-time job to pursue something that may or may not pan out. Basically, they have a lot of doubts. "What if I find I'm really not that good at this whole 'writing' thing?" "What if I end up not enjoying it as much as I thought I would?" "What if I quit my job and this just doesn't work out??" After wrestling with these questions, I ultimately decided I needed to dip my toes in slowly. I needed a low-pressure way I could experiment with writing and see if it was for me. It turns out, I had an opportunity staring me in the face. A ready-made way to wiggle my way into content writing in a niche I'm familiar with … and get paid for it right away … Writing blogs for the company where I already have a full-time job! That's right. For over a year, I've been paid to try my hand at content writing as part of my 9-5 job. First, I approached my boss and made sure he was okay with me working regular blogs into my workflow. Then, I pitched a list of blog ideas to our marketing department. They were more than happy to hand off the struggling blog to an industry professional and let me run with it! It was truly the best move I could have made. There has been literally no downside. Now I get to: - Write about a niche I enjoy and have almost a decade of experience in … - Explore topics in my field that I had always wanted to learn more about … - Experiment in a low-pressure environment (after all, they're not going to fire me over one "bad" blog!) … - Try out content writing without losing touch with my technical skills … - Teach students and those not familiar with my industry and/or my company about technical topics and what we do … - Help out a company that I know and am devoted to by providing content designed to attract talent and promote brand recognition … - Build my portfolio without having to actively seek out clients … And I get to do all this as part of my full-time job … Which means I can work it into my regular workdays and immediately get paid for my writing! And that's not even the best part … Writing for my day-job helped me land my first outside freelance gig! After I started writing blogs, I updated my LinkedIn profile to include "Content Writer" in my title. Sure enough, towards the end of last summer, a small start-up company related to my industry found me on LinkedIn and reached out to see if I would be interested in working with them as a freelance content writer. Of course, I said yes! Writing blogs for my company has allowed me to test-drive the writing industry, build valuable experience, and gain the visibility I needed to land my first freelance client. Why am I telling you this? Because I think this could be a viable path for AWAI newbies to try out content writing and see if it's for them. I mean, come on. Getting paid to write for a niche you know as part of your full-time job? No struggling to find that first client? No wondering how to build your portfolio? You can't beat that! I hope you can share my story with other AWAI-ers who might have similar concerns about jumping in. Writing content for the company you already work for is a great way for those who are on the fence to try out writing while keeping the security of their full-time job. –Krista All companies need good content and copy. And when it comes to something ongoing like a blog, it can be challenging to create fresh content again and again. So, I'm not surprised that her company's marketing department was excited to have someone offer to write it! Why not give it a shot yourself? Approach your own company and offer to work blog-writing into your current duties. You'll build your skills and portfolio — while you're on the clock! And if your current situation doesn't have that opportunity, start your own blog! It's another super low-pressure way to gain experience, build a portfolio of writing samples, and make some money at the same time. If you do it right, you could potentially attract paying clients to you, as Krista did. 👉 [Here's the best way to start.]( Have a great weekend! [Rebecca Matter’ s signature] Rebecca Matter P.S. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
