They can provide you with extra income. Enough to pay for a yearly vacation … to cover some bills … to supplement or even replace your income. A Money-Making Website takes time to establish. First you need to write the content, then wait for the search engines to rank your pages. In the meantime, you'll be busy figuring out ways to earn income from it … online courses, ebooks, affiliate marketing, advertising, or whatever you feel comfortable with. So how do you shorten the timespan from starting your Money-Making Website to when you start earning income? I started a Money-Making Website in 2016. In this time, I've made plenty of mistakes, hit dead ends, and had some big wins. With this experience behind me, I've come up with five tips for you to shorten your learning curve. Follow these tips and you'll be earning income from your MMW in no time. And I give you a special Bonus Tip … it's guaranteed to shorten your learning curve. But first, a little about my own money-making website, so you can see why setting one up is so worth it … Freedom To Travel My journey as a copywriter started in 2016. My wife Peta and I love exploring remote places in Outback Australia and were planning to begin full-time travel around Australia in 2018. The freedom of not knowing where we'll be from one day to the next is truly liberating. But I needed a new career … one I could do while traveling. Copywriting seemed like an obvious choice. And I have to say, it was a great decision! Copywriting allows us to travel, and allows us to be digital nomads. Then, along the way, I discovered Money-Making Websites. What a perfect fit! Why not combine my copywriting skills with the knowledge we have about traveling through Outback Australia? So, we started up our own Money-Making Website. The tagline describes it best … expert advice "For People Who Love Outback Travel" in Australia. The site's called Top Wire Traveller and is now well-established in the Australian outback travel niche. Every month, it brings in income for us through affiliate marketing. Top Wire Traveller would never have started if … well, if I'd never made a start on it. Which happens to be my first tip to shortening your learning curve … Tip #1. Get Started Now! We all suffer from analysis paralysis at some stage. You know how it goes. You think of a great idea, let it sit for a while, then the doubts creep in … "What if it doesn't work out?" "But I know nothing about topic X." "I'll never be as successful as Person A/Website A." The cure? Get started! You never know until you try. I had no idea if my outback travel website would be successful … neither did Nick Usborne with his coffee site. But if we hadn't made a start, we'd both still be wondering … Tip #2. Stay Focused on Your Niche Once you get started, your mind will be swirling with possible ideas, new opportunities, new topics. That's fantastic. However, stay focused on your niche. It's so easy to wander off in a different direction. Here's an example from my site. Strangely, I have a section on Top Wire Traveller about Off-Road Racing. How does that fit with outback travel? It doesn't really. There's a loose connection between racing 4x4s through Australia's deserts and traveling in outback Australia. But the connection is questionable at best. I wrote the off-road racing articles because I knew there was an audience for it. My plan was to bring people in via off-road racing, hoping they'd be interested in outback travel. I was trying to increase site traffic. In hindsight, my time would have been better spent writing product reviews, how-to guides, FAQs, or detailed articles on outback travel destinations. The lesson here? Stay focused on your chosen niche. The last thing you want is people coming to your site and wondering what it's about. Is it expert advice for "People Who Love Outback Travel" or is it about off-road racing? Tip #3. Learn SEO In Nick Usbourne's excellent [How to Write Your Own Money-Making Websites]( course – which I used to start up my own site – he teaches you about search engine optimization (SEO). Nick's a great teacher, he explains the ins and outs of SEO clearly. You use SEO to help your web pages rank on the search engines. What does this mean? In time, some of your Money-Making Website's pages will appear near the top when a person searches on a browser. And that's how the magic starts happening … your traffic grows quickly, and your income increases accordingly. Tip #4. Run Experiments Your Money-Making Website is an ideal place to experiment, to try new ideas. That section I wrote about off-road racing wasn't a waste of time, after all. It did bring in traffic, just not the type of traffic I was expecting. I learned from this. Try new things, test what works well and what doesn't. There's no pass or fail. Every experiment teaches you something new. Here's another example of a test I did … and this one went crazy. My wife Peta kept telling me we should have an interactive map of Australia, a map of destinations with clickable links on each location. I doubted it would be popular but decided to give it a try. The result? It's been published for over three years now and is consistently in the Top 15 pages. You never know till you try … Tip #5. Use Social Media, Don't Let It Use You Use social media to get the word out about your Money-Making Website. Use it to build your brand. Social media is an integral part of any website. But be smart about how you use it. Social media is an incredible time-suck. It takes so much time … if you let it. Ask yourself, what are you trying to achieve? Always keep in mind, social media channels are marketing channels – a tool to market your brand. Make social media work for you, not the other way around. How? Experiment with different social media channels. Test each channel for a month. Be ruthless. If it's not working, scrap it and try another channel. Settle on two or at most three social media channels. And make sure they do the job for you … whether that's driving traffic to your site, building brand awareness, growing sales, or something else. Discard the rest. This way, you won't go crazy trying to keep up with the endless demands of social media. If I'd have known back in 2016 what I know now, my Money-Making Website would have been up and running much sooner.
