A trick to staying motivated every day

But once you know the principles of persuasive writing … Like those you learn in [The AWAI Method™](, AWAI's [Accelerated Program](, and other AWAI programs … This secret I'm about to share will supercharge your career — and your life. More than any single copywriting skill you can learn. In fact, it's responsible for my success as both a copywriter and an engineer … As well as the success of dozens of copywriters and entrepreneurs I've mentored. Heck, I'd even say it's the secret behind my ability to split my time between a home outside Grand Teton National Park and a sailboat "down south." What is this secret? It's what I call your "Fab 5." Your Fab 5 are the five people you choose to let into your head … The most influential people on your success journey. Now you're probably thinking about the five people you see and talk to every day. And it's true that their words and actions will impact your journey — both good and bad. But here's a dirty little secret … You DON'T have to accept everyday people as your Fab 5! You have the power to choose an entirely different group. A group whose knowledge and insights come from having achieved at least a piece of what you're aiming for. And here's an insider tip … That group will change over time. Because as you clarify your vision, you'll adjust your path. So it only makes sense to adjust your Fab 5 to reflect your modified direction. In fact, on the path to your ultimate writer's life vision … You'll likely end up with several Fab 5 groups. I have about four Fab 5's. For example, at the recent AWAI Writer's Retreat, I got a chance to reconnect with one of mine: - Mark Ford – AWAI co-founder - Rebecca Matter – AWAI President - Paul Hollingshead – AWAI co-founder - Marcella Allison – 2018 AWAI Copywriter of the Year - Ted Capshaw – AWAI Chief Success Officer These are folks who have all helped me clarify my personal goals, and handed me strategies and tactics for achieving those goals. Now, why is defining your Fab 5 the ultimate secret to success? You might think, "Of course it works for you — you ride their success coattails." Or, if you skew to the woo-woo end of the scale … You might say it works because I receive some unseen success force they broadcast into the universe. And while I don't discount the effects of either … My engineering brain has observed another pattern. It's blinders. 👈 Just like the kind racehorses wear in the Kentucky Derby. Here's the thing … Most people also wear blinders — every day. Only ours are virtual, not physical. But just like the real thing, they cause us to focus on what's "ahead" … Rather than seeing what's already all around us. And in flying hang gliders for 20 years, I've learned this behavior is 100% normal. It's our brain's protective response to being overwhelmed with stimuli. Which is why your focus sharpens when you drive a new route to the store … the office … or a friend's house. So then why is it that when you've driven that route dozens of times … You still don't "see" everything around you? Because we often slide from intense focus straight to autopilot. Without remembering to take off our blinders. As a result, our brain's "protect against overload" physiology … Stays locked on and causes us to miss what's right outside that focus zone. And that's the real power of consciously choosing your Fab 5. Because whether through personal, one-on-one conversations … Small group chats at a live event or over Zoom … Or just reading their words … Insights from your Fab 5 can remove your blinders. So you can see the opportunities all around you. Back in 2000, Mark Ford's Early to Rise essays ripped off some of my blinders permanently. And a January 28, 2019 one-on-one chat with Rebecca pulled the blinders down long enough for me to see what was right in front of my face. So, when you're ready to pull off your blinders … And take advantage of the opportunities all around you … Find your Fab 5 and welcome them into your world. In person, if possible … Virtually, if time, money, or travel restrictions require it. Or, through reading their words or watching videos they create. One last tip if you're still unsure how to make this secret work for you.
