Executive Director, AWAI The Life-changing Power of Writing Sales Letters
By Tim Matassa When I left my teaching career behind in 2014, I thought I was also giving up my ability to change lives through my work. Turns out nothing could be further from the truth! There's life-changing ability in copywriting — especially in writing sales letters. But here's where it gets even more exciting … Writing sales letters is a "trifecta" … Because you can change YOUR READERS' lives … You can change YOUR CLIENTS' lives … And in the process, YOUR life will be changed too. Let me show you what I mean … It's Not All About the Money … but the Money Sure Is Nice I have a lot of wonderful memories as a teacher … But in 11 years, the most money I ever made was just north of $50,000. That's why it still blows my mind that I've been able to cross the six-figure mark as a copywriter. And I owe most of that to writing sales letters. Sales letters offer one of the ultimate benefits you can ever get as a writer: Do the work once, then get paid again and again! On top of getting a flat fee for writing the sales letter (potentially $2,000 to $5,000 if you're just starting out … and more like $10,000 or more when you have a track record of success) … Many sales letter writers earn royalties — often between 2% and 5% of sales. When their sales letter is successful, their client won't just use it once. They'll keep using it as long as it continues to work — so the writer gets to keep raking in those royalties. Now I'm not one of those writers you might hear about who earn a million dollars a year and bring in six-figure royalty checks … But I'm very happy with my six-figures and want to give you some perspective on how the money adds up. - My most successful sales letter for one campaign earned me a $6,363 royalty payment. Even in my best year as a teacher, that would've equaled almost 13% of my income.
- My top-earning sales letter overall is one I wrote in 2019. In less than three years, it's earned me more than $20,000 in royalties.
- And the first sales letter I ever wrote, back in 2017, is still being used and has earned me more than $10,000 in royalties. These are modest numbers compared to what's possible as a sales letter writer. But they represent more money than I ever thought I'd make. And while I haven't made any lavish purchases or traveled the world (yet) … I can't put a price on the peace of mind I have knowing I'll always be able to pay my bills — and still save money. You know where I notice my financial freedom the most, though? It's the little things. Like when I use Uber Eats to order dinner. Sometimes a burger, fries, and a shake — plus all the fees they charge and a tip for the driver — comes out to $40. My parents would be appalled! But I know I'm not going to miss that money. I don't have to justify every dollar I spend. That's what being able to write sales letters has given me. But that's not all … I want to share another number with you that's meaningful to me … Growing Businesses for Clients You LOVE After working on staff here at AWAI for a few years, I could see that my copy had generated over a million dollars in revenue … something I take as a source of pride. After all, AWAI trained me to be a copywriter, going back to when I first discovered copywriting … They were my first client when I started freelancing … And since hiring me full-time in 2017, I credit the people here with helping me change my life for the better. So knowing that my words have contributed more than a million dollars to growing this company means the world to me. And that's one of the beautiful things about writing sales letters that you can look forward to … Sure, some of your client relationships might be strictly business. That's totally fine. But some are likely to be people you connect with … who have a business you grow to love … who are doing something you believe in … Think about the type of clients you'd like to work with … Are they trying to help people get healthier? Are they doing good things for animals? Maybe you'll write sales letters for your favorite non-profit … or your church. Whatever it is, one of the true joys you'll have as a copywriter is writing a sales letter, knowing that the more persuasive it is, the more sales it will bring in — and the more it will help a client who's doing good in the world. But there's one thing that's even better than helping clients you love … The Ultimate Fulfillment of Writing Sales Letters Helping PEOPLE … Helping individual people … That's what it's all about. Like I said at the start, I thought I was sacrificing my ability to help people when I left teaching … But the truth is, as much as I miss that aspect of my old career — I actually get to help even more people by writing sales letters. I help people find solutions to their problems. In fact, writing for AWAI, I get to help them solve the same problems I had … Feeling stuck … Wanting more freedom over their life … And wanting to make more money. When I write a sales letter, I don't think of it as selling a copywriting program … I think of it as helping someone find a way to take back control over their life … And to get "unstuck" from whatever job or situation they're trying to get out of. The same will happen for you when you write sales letters … - You won't be selling a supplement … you'll be helping someone get relief from their pain …
- You won't be selling a workout program … you'll be helping someone gain confidence in their appearance …
- You won't be selling an investment newsletter … you'll be helping someone secure their retirement …
- You won't be selling a golf tutorial … you'll be helping someone get more enjoyment out of their favorite activity with their friends … And you can apply this to anything you write sales letters about, as long as you write about products and services you believe in.
